The Beach Boys hadn’t had a really good number one hit since their last one “Good Vibrations” in 1966. Finally, in 1988 they released “Kokomo” and the song hit number one.
“Kokomo” got its start in the movie “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise as a bartender. The song was written by Mike Love, Terry Melcher, John Phillips, and Scott McKenzie. Interest was drawn to the song through a great video with steel drums and great harmonies. The video included clips of the movie, the band playing on the beach with John Stamos on the drums.
It was decided that Kokomo sounded very much like some kind of place in the islands and after the song became a hit different Kokomo resorts were established. If you cannot get to the islands there is a place perhaps closer for those who live in the U.S. and that is Kokomo, Indiana but that is not the place they were thinking of when they wrote this song,

Nice video and a catchy tune. No Brian Wilson but the song has that recognizable Beach Boys harmony and of course Carl Wilson's angelic vocal.
