Feeling very pleased with myself!

I’m on a bit of a roll the past few days, I’ve managed to get to a few jobs that have been needing doing for ages, and have also fixed a few things – just about my favourite activity! First I managed to sew a new zip into my favourite old coat. I’ve had it for years already (at least ten years I can see from photographs - and I bought it from a charity shop in the first place!) but it’s not finished yet. The zip was worn at the bottom making it difficult to do up and I’ve been meaning to replace it for months, so I was pleased when I finally got around to it at the weekend. I also replaced the zip in a pair of jeans. The zip looked OK and did up without any trouble, but then as soon as I bent over or sat down it would undo again. I took it out and replaced it with another (saved from an old pair - I always keep the zips, buttons etc. from worn-out clothes) which looks exactly the same but stays closed - result! Then I fixed the bathroom – more about that in another post. Next I was able to fix a friend’s leaking guttering (up a ladder with a torch in my teeth!) which was satisfying and meant she was able to sleep easily even with the sound of the rain. And finally I repaired another friend’s favourite kettle (in the photo). She is attached to it, having brought it from Sweden, but when the handle broke off she continued to use it, holding it gingerly with a tea-towel, which was not great and especially not very safe in a house with three young children! With the aid of a pop-riveter I found among my Dad’s things (thanks Dad!) and a couple of longer rivets donated by a nice man on Freegle (thanks Nigel!) it’s now as good as new! So I’m feeling very smug and pleased with myself. Now wondering if I can sort out another friend’s plumbing problems. Maybe next week. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2019.

@fleura The pull cord thing on my bathroom light has just broken off so that we must pee in the dark which means I have to light a match to check the pot for snakes before using it. When would you be free to fix it?

Well that's easy to do, it's just a question of finding a slot in my busy schedule.

You did a very good job with that teapot. I moved the refrigerator to take out the silly horizontal bottle holder that took a whole shelf and I cut a piece of Plexiglas to create an additional shelf in the refrigerator. It's a lot better now.

so i see ya make house calls, wanna pop o'er to the u.s. fer a bit? sure could use yer help, lol. i'd donate ya a gazillion jeans zippers :) mercy if'n ya aint jest been a very busy'n productive lil gal! i know that all're most delighted o'er yer help with savin' e'm money 'n thingies they love. bonus ya got'cher jeans fixed, too. plumbin'? ugh... i've drippy faucets (now with rigged tubin' where's such drips 'nto gallon jugs'n not down the drain - used fer waterin' plants 'n fillin' the humidifier), leaky frost proofs outdoors (can ya say spray shower?) 'n a toilet that'll either not fill 'r won't stop (the tank). the drippy tub faucets 're gonna require rippin' out a section 'f wall to reach (thanks, hubs! brilliant way 'f installation - not). i've replaced the innards'f the loo multiple times to no 'vail, e'en the valve 'low. nary a clue what to do 'bout 't outside 'f constant monitorin', turnin' on/off with use. the frost proofs, so i've read, 're purty hopeless 'n need replaced. which requires diggin' 3 foot down'n the ground. anyhow, lots 'f work fer ya here if'n ya get bored there, lol.

@Fleura oh, that e'en the half 'f 't, hon. i dunno how i do either? patience? stupidity? sure 'ppreciate the offer. such'll get ironed out. oddly there's no washers'n these plumbin' gizmo's to be changed. the whole thingies're gonna need replaced. a spendy venture. aint sure what to do 'bout the loo? 'tis most annoyin', but since i'd be the 'nly one who uses't, i'd be used to its quirks. thus don't waste water.

Thanks! It's a shame so many things these days are made to be thrown out and not repaired easily, because fixing things is so satisfying!

Good for you. It's great to get some of these smaller repairs done, especially if they've been hanging around for a while.

And so much more satisfying than throwing something 'away' (wherever that is!) and buying a new one!

Thank you. I've just cut both the girls' hair as well - forgot to add that to the list! And yes they are pleased with the result. They're far more trusting than I was!
