Thinking about getting a health check

It's easy to forget about health checks when we are feeling well but there are conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol that can present no symptoms until it is too late. When we are young we don't give our health checks a second though unless we feel ill but as we grow older we become more aware of the "silent killers".
For that reason I am going to have a few health checks done. I notice I get frequent heartburn now which is usually not serious but still worth getting a doctor to look at.
Do you get regular health checks even if you are feeling well?

I had a blood pressure monitor but it doesn't work any more. I should get a new one.

@LadyDuck I always think the doctor is more reliable although I hate that feeling when they pump up your arm and it feels like it will explode!

@sprite1950 We have a very old one that still works, the more expensive we bought 5 years ago it's already gone.

One specialist said that high blood pressure and high cholesterol level is a bad combination. It is either a heart attack of a stroke. My wife is in that condition although she is taking medications for that.

I last had mine checked 2 years ago when I had a lump in my neck (which turned out to be nothing serious) and everything was fine although a lot can happen in 2 years.

@sprite1950 this reminds me that a friend in the US underwent surgery for a lump in her neck. It is malignant.

@Alexandoy Mine was just a swollen lymph node which went on its own in around 2 months. I had lots of tests and a scan but they all came back clear. I was worried though.

You're just a baby! I used to think I was old when I reached 40 but now I am 69 and realise how young that was. As long as you take care of yourself you will probably be fine but I like to get a check up now I am older to make sure.

@AkoPinay You sound as if you eat healthily although I hate sardines. I can't bear the smell of them but my dogs love them.

@sprite1950 I have a friend who had a stroke due to highblood pressure at 45 :( I assume because of what she eats, she eats more pork and selfom eat fruits and veggies which is the opposite of me. I always eat fish, veggies and fruits unless I have no enough budget I go for canned sardines and noodles when in Manila. But at my hometown poor is healthier because they plant root crops and veggies and that's what we eat most of the time.

I agree with you. My husband has a free annual physical exam every year. We get to have our check-ups then.

We get called for a free flu jab over the age of 60 but we have to actually ring and make an appointment for a general check.

@mlgen1037 I don't normally have them as I don't really suffer from colds and flu. They never made much difference to my mother so I'm sceptical about them

@sprite1950 I think that’s the protocol before having the free flu jab.

I think a lot of us are like that but sometimes there are no symptoms so we don't know if all is well.

Unfortunately I don't though I know I need to get my sugar checked as diabetes runs in the family.

Yes that is a good idea. My grandmother on my mother's side had diabetes but she is the only one in the family so far.

@sprite1950 Can't imagine living a life like that at all and she was too young to get it.

@toniganzon One of my granddaughter's friends has Diabetes Type 1 and she is only 12. She has learned to control her diet and has to inject herself. She does it like it was nothing.

I have put on a little weight over the last year and don't walk enough, I am making a conscious effort to get more exercise.

@Shavkat I could do with losing at least 7 lbs or more. My clothes feel tight.

Haha! I know the feeling but I would rather go to the doctor than the dentist.

No, the only doctor I see is my gyno which is only once a year. I just saw her last week.

We get called for smear tests every 3 years until we are 65. After that we have to make our own appointments.

@JESSY3236 My granddaughter started her periods 6 months ago and she gets cramps. She is just 13 but very irregular at the moment. She takes over the counter pain killers to control the pain.

That is a good idea to get health check-ups. My doctor likes to see me around once a month to see how I am.

I think it is reassuring to know that everything is ok.

but if only I have enough money I'd get regular check up. My last annual check up was ten years ago. Everything was fine. My last BP was ok two years ago. By the way, I am only 45.
