This is my work time....

Yes 12-2PM is my work time but here I am mylotting. Because I went to work early today. Let me take you to the story for this change of time. Last evening I had a tough time calling and convincing these parents. But glad that I could.I had almost lost my patience but I managed to have a pleasant tone over phone. That's a skill that you learn being a counselor. Good that they could not see my irritated face over phone. Yesterday was an off day and I got a call from the school principal. She told that the parents of my two children do not want to pay for their overnight trip and I have to talk to them and convince them. Now my two children are on Autism Spectrum and have mild dyslexia. But they are social and friendly and try to gel with their peers in their own way which might seem weird to others. Parents fail to understand autism and try every now and then to fix the children for something that is not in their control. In few meetings I have tried to convince them that Autism is not something to be fixed but understood and supported. But here again they wanted to be strict, deprive the child of his joy and teach them a lesson for being not able to read and write like their peers. The classes of 3rd and 4th Grade have gone for a trip to Organic farming and diary on outskirts of city. They will stay their overnight and will be back tomorrow afternoon. Now these two sets of parents did not want to send these kids to the trip and did not pay for it. The thought that depriving them of this fun will teach them a lesson to be good in studies. You can punish a child for his wrong attitude but not for his disability or genuine difficulties. I tried to convince them for a long on phone. And finally they came to real point. They felt that they are paying extra for their children's therapy session with me and so they should not miss any one of them. And that made me make this change. I told they will not miss any of the hours that they are paying for. I went early morning at 8:30 and took their sessions till 10;30. I will compensate for tomorrow class on Saturday. They finally paid and these children boarded the bus with their peers at 11 AM. I had to make arrangements for the change of plan. My friend could drop my daughter and her to school today. I know that the only reason these children look forward to coming to school is to have fun with their friends. Academics is not fun and so is other activities because of their difficulties but they fight each moment to survive and I could not let this experiential learning trip not happen for them. Especially for my child D who is so fond of cows and draws only cows when he is happy.I use a cow figurine for his reward too. When he accomplishes his task, I let him play with it for some time. Cows mean a whole world to him and I have weaved so many stories around cow to educate him They were super excited. D does not like to hug and showed me his happiness by caressing my cheeks and pressing my hand so hard that it turned redand S does not know how much pressure to apply for hug and he literally squeezed me So I can still feel their excitement on my body Boys are gone and I will wait for Saturday when they come to me and share all their excitement and experiences. I need to prepare my session according to that. I do not mind working on a no working day for them SO here I am mylotting!

That's why I love teaching because we learn patience and we become more compassionate. You did a good job, Arunima.

It surely is. I feel good only when I can make them happy. If today they would have missed the trip, it would have made me very upset.

I am so glad that you could finally convince those parents. I guess that most of the time it's harder to deal with parents than with difficult children. You are doing and excellent job.

@LadyDuck I agree. Children are simple and more accepting. Adults come with a shell of ego and prejudices and it becomes challenging to reach them.

That is awesome that you got through to the parents. I'm glad the kids didn't have to miss the fun trip. That is sad how the parents wanted to punish them by not letting them go. How sad! I applaud your ability to change their minds.

It is a neuro disorder and effects people in many ways..especially in social life. It is a full spectrum and each autistic person is different from another.
