Reddish coloring on our dog

Our only female dog has this issue of getting red color from her saliva and tears. It is like a season that lasts for months. She is cleaning her paws with her mouth so the paws have that color. The area around the eyes is colored too. For dog lovers, do you have an idea? Even the vet is stumped.

Maybe you can find another vet that might have a better idea about what this is, I have no clue what it could be.

We already asked 2 or our vets, another vet and even a dog breeder. Nothing so far.

@rebelann there are so many speculations like diet, environment, etc but there is no official declaration for the reason of the coloring.

Strange that the vet doesn't know how to help.

We had consulted the 2 vets and another. Even the dog breeders couldn't say a thing about it.

@Nevena83 I agree doesn't sound like a very knowledgeable vet.

@shaggin that's why I am posting it here because it's been like that for years now. Even a thorough bath couldn't wash off the color. That picture was taken after giving her a bath.

I really have no idea either. If vets gets mystified by it then most of us would probably be the same. I just hope that your dog is not affected by it and she feels okay and still active despite that Maybe washing it may have it removed? I hope this link could help you.

The coloring was happening for years. Thanks for the link but it is against my policy to clink links. I only read what is written here.

@Alexandoy Oh ok it is just a writeup I cannot copy and paste the content else I might be plagiarizing it.. Anyway it is said that it is caused mainly by a certain cheimical called prophyrin mixed with tears or saliva that give it the reddish color. It more acts like the oxidation like that of metal rusting. They also said that too much of it may be cause by any of the following: Allergic reaction causing too much production of tears. Another is yeast and bacterial infection. Another is reaction on food additives given to them. You can ask about them from your vet to maybe further explain to you. I suspect that to be allergic reaction.

@rsa101 those were already said by the vets, we had 2 and we consulted another 1 so that makes it 3 vets plus the breeder and some other people. But thanks for your concern.

Maybe due to her white fur, it shows up more. Not sure.

You are right with the white but one other dog of ours is also white although he is a male and Barbie is a female.

I love dogs. So, I read an article. According to an article, the symptoms of your dog are caused by a chemical called porphyrin. Porphyrins are excreted primarily through bile and the intestinal tract, but in dogs a significant amount of porphyrin is excreted through tears, saliva and also urine. What the article says about the symptom is... "Fortunately, porphyrin staining is in itself a cosmetic problem and causes the dog no harm. However, the underlying or causative problem can be significant. Eyelid abnormalities may cause significant discomfort. Excess salivation may be caused by oral discomfort such as gum disease or dental problems". By the way, your dog is very cute. I ever had a dog which is similar but his fur is black grayish.

I read online some breeds that is common with but that often it is caused by dyes in the foods they eat. My dog had this when she was a puppy and eating ol'roy puppy food. I switched to Purina and the red staining under her eyes stopped.

@Alexandoy well a food sensitivity is what causes it usually and not all dogs have the same sensitivities to things just like people.

@shaggin you may be right but their diet is just the same in the regular way. There is practically on variation on their food.

We have investigated the food but it was out of the question now because we have 3 dogs who eat the same food. The only clue is Barbie is a female and the 2 other dogs are both male.

Are you sure it's not blood? Maybe from inside her mouth?

We already consulted 2 vets but nothing substantial about the coloring.
