Online Shopping is a Mental Illness

Do you agree? Researchers from a medical school in Germany termed it as Buying Shopping Disorder or BSD. Younger people are said to be prone to them and they could experience higher levels of anxiety and depression. I am trying to analyze myself if I have this but I don't get anxious nor depress when I couldn't get what I want when I'm window shopping online. I can control myself when to stop buying something. I do buy on impulse once in awhile but I am still in great control of when to stop. Do you have BSD?

Haha I think I am borderline, I like doing window shopping on those app but I still have complete control when I buy and when I hold on buying. I think I still am in control of everything in here and don't get anxious or depress if I am not able to buy it. I may get a bit frustrated when I want to buy it but I could not because of budgetary constraints but I am okay with that.

@toniganzon Yeah that is why I still feel I am borderline with it since I still control myself from buying it.

No, I prefer to buy from stores. I have a need to feel the material, look at the workmanship, and check for quality. I buy whatever I absolutely love.

In my case, I only shop online for stuff that aren't locally available. And mostly they're my planner or journal stuff including my craft tools and materials.

I think that a lot of people feel the opposite, that online shopping makes them happy.

Sure as long as you can pay your debt especially when you're using a credit card to purchase things online. I am happy with my purchases because I have a use for them. I never buy things that I don't think I'll never use though sometimes I don't need them but I want them.

@toniganzon We all buy things we don't always need but want. It's just a matter of not buying those things too often.

May be that those who only buy online and sit all the day in front of their computers searching what to buy have a sort of disorder. I buy online what I cannot find in the local stores.

I do the same and most of my journals couldn't be found in local stores here. The ones I prefer are usually from Japan, UK, and the US.

@LadyDuck the local stores and book stores here don't sell the type of paper that I use with my journal. I use different kinds of medium for my journal and ordinary paper simply won't do.

It's easier for me to control myself at a physical store. Why? Because most of the things I want are not being sold in any of the stores at all! I like stuff coming from Japan and unfortunately they aren't locally available here. And some of the items I want are from the US and no stores here like EM Cosmetics for example and Moment lens.

@toniganzon oh that is good to hear. I seldom visit malls recently so I have to buy some things online. My daughter likes the soap we bought in Japan before so we have to order it online now.

@toniganzon If I do buy on impulse sometimes but not online. I do it in person. If I need something and can only get it online then someone else helps me.

@toniganzon My technician is great and helps me with things because I am not good at ordering and my Hebrew is not good enough to do it myself and also I trust him so much that he will find the best deal for me.

To an extent yes, but nothing so serious. I agree though with the accessibility of quick shopping it is very easy to go overboard.

Only when I have money, that much money. Nope, so far i don't. If it's an addiction, only you can stop it.

If it's an addiction, a third party intervention is necessary.

No. I do go a little crazy with online shopping, but I do know when to stop. Also I know I can always wait until Black Friday to do any heavy online shopping.

I don't usually wait for Black Friday or the big sale. Because the ones I really like would be sold out by then.

One thing people so like to so online shopping is money gone via computer or can say electronicly mostly so don't feel same as if money spend via hands which is my opinions. If we need something and buy something is OK but lets check if something good which one is unnecessary is just wast of money. I just control myself.

I got a laugh with the title, waheehee. But seriously, times are a-changing and sooner or later all technology will overtake us. Anyway, I am not really much for online shopping because I want to see the real thing. Another issue is when the product is defective, how do you get a replacement?

There are many online stores that are offering a refund policy (e.g. 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed). It means that if you are not satisfied with the product (including a defective product), you can simply send it back to them, they will pay a shipping and handling fee to return it.

@WackyDecor I know that is the claim of online stores but I have twice experienced that the store would not reply. So now I only shop with Lazada, it is the biggest onilne center here like Amazon. It will refund or force the vendor for a replacement.

I'm sure there are many that buy things they don't need. I don't know that it should be designated as an illness though.

They are actually insisting that it should be considered an illness especially when online buying is uncontrollable. Especially those who buy things they don't need at all but simply have the itch to buy something online. It's an addiction.

I read that article. It is specifically written that "one-third of a group of patients seeking treatment for buying-shopping disorder (BSD) also reported symptoms of addictive online shopping". If someone can control himself when he should stop buying at brick and mortal stores, he is also not being categorized as having BSD in online stores (e.g. online shopping) either. Since you can control yourself when you should stop, you're not having BSD. So, you should not worry about it. Besides, the article mentions that "BSD is not categorized as a separate mental health condition; it is characterized as "other specified impulse control disorder". So, online shopping is NOT a mental illness.

I know for a fact that I don't have BSD and not a single moment did I worry about it.
