Several months ago, I made a "raft" for the kids at my friend's preschool, where I sometimes work. It received a lot of "attention" and eventually started to fall apart. This weekend, I "fixed" the raft, using waterproof wood glue, Barefoot wine corks (I like their Pinot Grigio) and some pop-sickle sticks from a local arts and crafts store. I hope it will hold together and become a favorite "toy" next week. We shall see.

It's often the simple toys that get the most use and are the most loved.

I am sure the kids will enjoy that raft. How many Pinot Grigio do you have to drink to get the corks needed? Just wondering

Heh heh. Nine corks per raft. I originally made this one with Charles Shaw corks. But I am using Barefoot corks for the missing middle piece, as I think the kids may notice the "cute" foot graphic.

Looks like it can survive some waves. I often underestimate the power of the glue.

Regular wood glue is water-soluble. So I use special indoor/outdoor wood glue...or crazy glue.

That's what I use when I make rafts, of course. But 4-year-olds aren't always gentle with their toys.

I like doing these types of projects with my 5th grade student. Creating is his reward for doing his work in the afternoon. My other one on one student cannot do any of this. I am happy if he picks up a little sign language. This raft is the kind of craft I would do with my grands, though.

Yes, Horse Jr. has made some rafts with me. How come the one student can't? Disabled?

I think it will. Until it doesn't. Then I'll fix it again.

What is the main material of the raft, light wood?

Popsicle sticks, probably pine.

I'll show it off when I get there. There's even a teachable moment. I'll explain that I used something "like kid glue," but water-proof.

@just4him I hope we do some outdoor water table action while the weather is still temperate.

@TheHorse That's great. I'm sure they will be all over it wanting to see it in action.
