Should I say yes?

Yesterday, I got a message from one of the staff in a college school here. They told me they're opening a review center and was hoping I would accept their invitation to be one of the lecturer! Me, a lecturer for a professional board exam? I was surprised that they found me to be qualified to talk about the law in relation real estate brokerage. I told them to give me time to think about it and told them it was an honor to be invited. I haven't really made up my mind yet and I am still weighing things. I am not confident in myself. I'll be lecturing a bunch of people wanting to pass the exam to become a professional real estate broker. They're newly graduate students, some of them are not because they have failed the exam once. I would feel crushed if I couldn't give them enough knowledge to pass the test although only two subjects will be assigned to me. Nevertheless, I feel the weight of the responsibility and that is what's holding me back from saying yes. I am very passionate about sharing my knowledge. In fact when I was reviewing for the exam, I was able to help three people in the class and they passed the exam. In fact they would repeatedly tell me until now, they wouldn't have made it without my help. I am in a dilemma but I will seek guidance and I know I will have my decision this weekend.

Well you passed it so you can teach it if you know the topic well. I think if you have the time you can try. I think you will only discuss a portion of the whole exams and I am pretty sure the school will provide you what to discuss with your students.

It's impossible that I'll bye discussing all the subjects. Just because someone passed then board exam doesn't qualify him or her to be a lecturer.

@toniganzon Assess if you can provide them the knowledge you have in you. I think you are qualified to teach them and they would not have invited your if they think that your not qualified.

@rsa101 If I were the school with a 100% passing rate in a board exam, I wouldn't invite just anybody. That's where the pressure is coming from on my side. But since I already accepted, I just have to face it.

I think you answered your question in the second to last paragraph when you said you are passionate about sharing your knowledge. When you have a burning passion for something, your confidence will naturally show through. I think you will do a wonderful job passing on your knowledge and expertise to your students! I say go for it!

Thanks Jeff. I did accept the position. And I was also offered a teaching position as well for the next semester but I haven't decided whether I should do it or not.

@moffittjc Thanks. I actually started preparing my lecture today. It will only be a day or probably two day-lecture. But it's going to be an intensive one. Been quite busy. Entered into a new business venture recently and since we are quite new to this, there's a bit of a struggle.

Knowing myself, I am sure I would not be confident enough to accept, but if you can, your experience would be extremely important for the students.

Then only thing that held me back was the thought of them not passing the board exam because I would surely blame myself. However, my son told me that them not passing the board exam wouldn't bee my fault. After all, I'll be lecturing only one subject.

Hi, yes I have accepted and I have been offered a teaching position for the next semester as well. But I am not sure I'd be taking the teaching position.

@thelme55 I haven't accepted the teaching position for the next semester which is in June and I am not sure whether I should take it. It depends on my schedule if I can handle the load. It's not easy to run a company and have a teaching job on the side.

At the start, you will falter but will eventually get the hang of it. This is what I think because you have the foundation as you mentioned in your post. I hope you make the right decision.

I usually never falter at the beginning. Faltering isn't in my vocabulary especially when speaking in front of people. My apprehension is more on the responsibility when these students don't pass the board exam.

@toniganzon You got the confidence. You go girl. Passing the board would be effort both for you and the students.

I find teaching easy actually, but my apprehension is more on the part where they don't pass the board exam. I would take it hard even though I'll be teaching only one subject.

Just simply ask yourself: are you going to help them or not?

Helping is easy. But knowing myself, I am hard on myself than anybody else. I take it personally when the person I teach don't make it.
