My education is paying off

I realized my youthful education is paying off just this evening. All those 1000 word themes written as disciplinary measures for not doing homework or talking in class and all those lines and lines of "I will not talk in class" have totally prepared me. I can now whip out a 400 to 500 word article of my choice with very little effort. Sometimes I get to research my topic, and that is fun as well. It is actually much easier, because I can type it on the computer. No more laboriously printing, or scrolling along in cursive, line after annoying line. Just turn me loose and let me go. Now they pay me to jabber on about stuff. I do not know how many of you had that kind of experience as a child. Were you made to write to punish you for a school day infraction?

Mostly I was well behaved in class. But, with practice, you can get remarkably quick at knocking out short articles.

The thing is I NEVER would have been naughty on purpose, I just come from a long line of talkers. I also probably am recalling all the other kids who wrote those millions of words.

@GardenGerty Some kids in my class were very talkative too. They were always getting into trouble for it.

For part of grade 7 and all of grade 8, I went to a Catholic school and the nun teaching us would make the entire class write out pages of the dictionary if we got too unruly.

I never had perfect handwriting, but as I got older I enjoyed trying to copy various fancy types of writing. Again, looking back, it seems we wrote pages and pages of loops first, then circles then one letter after another. I never did quite get my lower case "q" right.

all writing was a punishment. I had other things to do. I wanted to have fun, be with friends, party, find a girlfriend.... So, homework, or any writing was a pain to me, therefore punishment. But no, I was not assigned menial writing for the purpose of punishment. I doubt I would have done it had it been assigned. I was like that in school. I didn't grow interested in education until my senior year.

Very honest, very usual and typical and our schools continue to fail at engaging students. My first husband was likely a genius, and he did very poorly in school.

@GardenGerty I don't claim any high intelligence, but I did go back after 3+ years in the military and get a college degree, graduating with a 3.25. This while raising three children and working. I also put in two years into law school, but I did drop that because it interfered too much with family life.

I haven't experienced it when I was at school. A 400 to 500 word article seems to be a breeze for you now.

Oh it was a real common punishment for entire classes or for boys especially who were always in trouble.
