What You Need, What You Want, Are NOT the Same Thing

Today the baseball offseason really heats up with the baseball winter meetings, taking place in San Diego. (They aren’t complaining about the weather there, that’s for sure!) I opened my MLB app today and saw this headline: “MadBum Wants Nine-Figure Deal.” There was a song on Linda Ronstadt’s Mad Love (appropriate coincidence) album called “The Cost of Love.” One of the lines, and one I frequently quote, says, “What you need, what you want, are not the same thing.” Heck, I want a nine-figure salary! The closest I’ve ever gotten, though, was an average where there were lots of decimal point places on the right ($10.3510274 an hour). Do I think Madison Bumgarner is worth it? In a word, NO. I don’t think any athlete, singer, actor, or whatever is worth that kind of money, when police officers are making $26-$35 grand a year or firefighters are making $20-$30K a year. And teachers? Some wacko politician in California wants teachers to work until 6 PM to accommodate the parents (as if teachers are the old stereotypical single woman)???? For what they make? Bah! You don’t need it, Bumgarner. Don’t try to drive up inflation at baseball games. It’s expensive enough to enjoy the “National Pastime” as it is without having to pay you a couple of billion.
