So, she was home almost exactly 3 hours before we called EMS to take her back to the hospital. She passed out twice before the EMTs were able to get her out of her room. This time they actually carried her out, she was that weak. Once again I was unable to follow her to the hospital. This time she had put in an order with Instacart. Again, she had been put in a room before I did get there. Turned out that she had pneumonia and an infection in her exit site where they had taken the tube out back in September. I looked up pneumonia and she probably had gotten it because she had spent so much time in bed. We also suspect that the infection was because the rehab place wasn't doing a good job of keeping the exit site clean and covered. She had received 3 IV antibiotics before they moved her to the room and were giving her a 4th when they did. This time she was only in the hospital about 7 days before being sent back to the rehab place. I guess someone read them the riot act about the exit site since she had no more trouble about them keeping it clean and covered. Now, during this time she had her birthday. I went, alone, to a restaurant to "celebrate" her birthday. I had instructions as to what she wanted me to bring her. After I ate my food - sorry, but steak doesn't travel as well as ribs - I took the food to her. I sat with her while she ate so its not like I dumped the food and ran. Nine days later it was my birthday. This time our guy friend had been over to mop. After that we went back to the same restaurant and I once again got steak. Mind you, this was the first beef I had eaten since the last time so its not like I'm out eating steak all the time. After we ate, we then went with ribs to visit again. We sat with her while she ate. The previous Friday they had told us that she was going home the next Friday. Both of us thought this was a BAD IDEA, but you can't argue too successfully with insurance companies. So, on Friday I went up, and I had just about everything loaded in the car, and we were headed out when someone from the rehab place came and told us they had successfully argued another 5 days. So, I had to go down to the car and bring almost all her stuff back up. At least this time they found someone to go down and help me so I only had to make one trip instead of 5! This brought us to the day before the U.S. Thanksgiving. Once again, I got there and she wasn't back from dialysis. Once again, I got her stuff loaded up in the car before she got there. This time, however, we did come home. She was tired and went right to bed. I found something for her to eat a little later. Found something for me to eat as well. I stayed up long enough for the roommate to go to work so I could bring the dogs in and feed them. Then, after one final check on the wife, I went to bed. (I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get this posted folks, the weather is giving my head trouble.)

I hate that you have to argue to get extended hospital and rehab stays when they are needed.

Insurance companies are almost always only looking at the bottom line.

It is a shame that the insurance companies are ruling, while doctors should decide what is better for a patient. I am really sorry you have to go through all this.

I was pretty upset with the way the hospital and rehab kept sending her home, but I also knew it was the insurance companies calling the shots. It's a shame when faceless people in offices are telling the doctors what to do.

@ElicBxn I know that the insurance companies are those that pressure the doctors to send people home or to stop the treatments. It is a shame.

Yeah, but the rehab was the one who won that argument. Probably by pointing out that they insisted before and she was right back. She had dialysis today and the tech pointed out how much stronger she was than when she first came home back in November.

So is that it or is there a further episode? How is she doing now?

Its pretty much it. She's home now. She did have a procedure that replaced her PD catheter last week, so come mid-January she will go back on PD rather than hemo that she's been on since about September 15th.

Things are improved from when she got sick back in September. Except that spending 2 and a half months in bed has made her very weak and made her dizzy spells much worse.
