Beanie Babies are serious things, okay!

I had beanie babies as a preteen but got rid of most of them. I'm not actually sure when / why / how I did, it's been so many years. I still have some looney tunes themed beanie babies, but not all of them. In 1999 two people went to court after their divorce. They just couldn't decide on splitting up their collection of beanie babies. Apparently their collection was estimated to be worth around $5,000, but neither could decide among themselves who got what. Well, a judge in Los Angeles County had had enough and ordered the couple to bring them all in, spread them on the floor of the court and pick them out one by one. What a waste of time and effort on the part of the courthouse staff.

I don't have them. I think they weren't very popular here.

I am not sure where all they were popular, but they really blew up (got popular) in the late 90s

I have wanted several collections over of things (Not necessarily all beanie baby) but the cost and the space to store / show them is something I can't meet.

People invested in beanie babies and the so called values all fell through.

They're still going for pretty steep prices on Ebay... Or atleast, people trying to sell them for those prices.

So ridiculous. Beanie Babies were overrated in their eventual worth anyway.

They were the trend of the 90's though and atleast hold worth in the eyes of the kids of that generation.

I can think of many things in a divorce proceeding that would be of value to the court and the parties involved. THIS would not be one of them.

Seems rather silly considering things like house, car, investment accounts, children etc.

@porwest I certainly hope not, but it makes me wonder... Could be they divorced over financial differences, and the beanie babies was just the tip of the iceberg.

@ScribbledAdNauseum My thoughts as well. I hope that wasn't their ONLY asset.

Are beanie babies worth anything these days?

Yep. Ty Toys had stopped making them, though I do think they make them again now? I haven't actually kept up with all that. Once they stopped making them, however, they gained popularity and more value / worth. I just looked on ebay and one of the beanie babies I had all the way back in the 90's is now worth $800.00.

I remember collecting them as a kid and people telling me they'll be worth so much when I get older...but I gave them all away. I had over 50! I think I kept one or two but they might be in the attic.

The same happened with me. They said they'd be worth so much, and I either threw them away, gave them away or they were left to rot. I have a few, but they weren't from the same collection.

Sometimes courts also take bizarre decisions

True, but in this case the judge had enough and wanted it over with.
