Car Playing up.

I didn't drive my car for around a month due to being ill and when I tried to start it yesterday the battery was flat. My partner jump started it and I gave it a short drive but then I noticed the ABS light was on which I know is related to the brakes. I looked in the manual and it sounded serious although my partner says the brakes will still work but not as efficiently if I had to do an emergency stop. I'm reluctant to drive it now and my garage is closed over Christmas. Looks like I'll be walking a lot more!

About the ABS your partner is right and surely the cold of the past days was the main problem for the battery.

I spoke to my garage today as when I walked past there was someone there. My mechanic said it would probably reset itself once I had driven it a bit more and it was linked to the flat battery.

@LadyDuck If Teagan is better I will give it a drive tomorrow, She doesn't like me leaving her when she is ill so I can't go far.

@sprite1950 That is what my husband said when I asked him.

Ack. That's no fun. Hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix.

@porwest The battery is quite new and cost more than £100 because it is a SmartCar and the parts are expensive. I suppose any car that isn't driven will get a flat battery after a few weeks though.

@sprite1950 That does not seem like an awful price for a battery. But yes, a battery can wear down if you don't start a car for a while. But even for a couple of weeks the car should start. Your old battery was obviously needing to be replaced.

@sprite1950 I suppose that's fairly good news. A battery doesn't cost that much and is way less than anything having to do with the brakes.

When the car does not look normal, I am hesitant to drive it because I hate to be outside and the car would stall.

I'm terrified of breaking down because it happened once in rush hour traffic in the dark and I had forgotten my phone.

@sprite1950 that breakdown is my main concern so we spend for the regular preventive maintenance of our car.

@Alexandoy Yes the car I broke down in was quite old. It was a problem with the battery disconnecting. It put me off driving for a while though.

Yes, the batteries drain when not in use unless you disconnect it, have a trickle charge, or have someone drive it a little. Best to have the battery and definitely the brakes checked before driving the car.

Yes it is due for a service so I will book it in as soon as I can. I spoke to my mechanic and he said the ABS light is almost certainly on due to the battery dying but I don't feel comfortable driving it around with the light showing.

@sprite1950 I wouldn’t feel safe either. It’s so important to have those things fixed, even if it’s a pain in the neck. Good luck!

@DianneN Well the New Year is over now so most people will be going back to work. I should be able to book it in for a service today.

@sprite1950 I agree with you to get it checked to make sure you are safe. Better to be safe than sorry.
