Taking down the Christmas decorations

United States

....well not yet. We usually wait until the New Year. Apparently many people wait until January 6th, which is a holiday called Epiphany (?) but I don't know much about it. I didn't do much as far as decorations go. Just my small tree with white lights and gold bead garland. Very simple but it still looked tasteful. Did you have an overabundance of decorations or did you keep it simple? How long do you keep up your Christmas decorations? Do you immediately take them down or do you wait a week like me? OR do you leave 'em up all year round? Happy last day of the year and Happy New Year :) *picture from stockvault

We remove the Christmas decorations after the new year. On the first weekend of January.

@isweartokira you are right that it's a nice feeling to stretch the period of Christmas.

I have enough decorations for inside and outside to go all out, but usually I try to decorate in moderation. This year I put up a little more than I normally do, but nothing over the top like some people do. I typically keep my decorations up until after the new year. Not because of Epiphany (I'm not even sure I know what that is), but it's usually because I go on vacation during or after Christmas and I'm not home to take everything down before January.

@isweartokira Nothing wrong with going low-key on the decorations. The holiday shouldn’t be a stressful time for people, although it often is. No need to add to the stress with over-the-top decorations!

This was probably my laziest year. Just a little tabletop tree and a wreath on the door. But honestly it was much less stressful, I'll probably do the same next year (maybe a little more, idk)

I wish you a happy new year. We only have a tree with a few decorations. We do have lots of cards scattered around the room, though, and - somewhere behind some cards - there are two little reindeer light things that were a free gift with something. I usually take down my tree on the 6th because, apparently, it's unlucky to do it after - or you have to keep them up all year round. I'm not sure why I stick to that tradition but I like it. Our tree went up a little later than it usually does so I won't get fed up with it too soon We have mentioned getting a new tree and decorations for next year. I bought my current tree the first year I moved here, which was 5 years ago. This year is the our first 'married' Christmas so it might be nice to do something new for next year.

oh I've never heard of that superstition but I kind of like it! sometimes a change is nice. I kept it simple this year but maybe I'll get ambitious next time. my tree seems to get smaller and smaller each time I get a new tree

@isweartokira We've only really had the tree and its decorations since we moved. The tree is a 6ft white plastic one. It's got some silver baubles, and some silver and blue tinsel. We're probably going to need some new decorations next year as we seem to lose baubles every year! I do have one new decoration, though - a dolphin in a spaceship that was a gift from my nephew.

@pumpkinjam a dolphin in a spaceship. That sounds like the pilot of a new cartoon or something I bet it's very cute. I just have my little 2.5 foot tree. Maybe I'll try a bigger one again in years to come. I just don't really have the space to store it at the moment

Growing up it was always decorations go up 12 days before christmas and come down 12 days after, I was always told that to leave them any longer than that meant bad luck for the year. Being a superstitious little human I tend to stick to that for fear of a year of bad luck!

yeah I've been hearing about that superstition! it also helps to keep the Christmas feeling around for a little longer

@isweartokira I grew up with all kinds of superstitions, seemed to be one for everything! I was terrible with it all but I have managed to stop living by them so much now!

@gemini_rose I stopped with superstition when I heard that a black cat crossing your path was bad luck...but I had a black cat for years and nothing bad happened to me. but they're still fun to think about

I usually start taking things down a few days after New Year's. I figure with the amount of time spent putting everything on the tree and decorating the house what's the rush. Keeping that holiday spirit alive a little longer can't hurt? Right?

I usually take them down on January 6th as my parents used to do when I was a child. But this year I took it away 3 days after Christmas. Sofía came and was bored so I told her to take down the decorations. She was perfectly happy!

Your decorations sound very tasteful, I like simple as I find it the prettiest also. Our decorations are down and packed away already. We have a tall 7 foot tree, and I do not feel that I can properly clean or vacuum around it, so I always feel better when its tucked away. We put it up so early that it can come down early, as well as the garland and other items that we put out. Enjoy the last of your decorations and have a blessed and happy new year.

whoa that's a tall tree compared to my little 2.5 foot one. but yes I bet it's easier to clean when something that big is out of the way. happy new year to you too

I have stripped the tree of decor, I have to remove lights and I am done. I usually do it a day after but this year I put it up late.

I put mine up late too, maybe that's why it feels weird to just put it away. I reuse the small string of lights from the tree in my room.
