To tip or not to tip

This is a question when you eat in a restaurant. When the bill includes a "service charge" does that mean you do not need to leave a tip for the server or do you still need to leave a tip?

I think you should leave a tip. But I'm not sure.

I leave a tip, why? Because service charge is divided equally among all the waiters and waitresses of the restaurant whereas my tip is for the person who served me or us specifically, of course the amount depends on how I'm treated at rare times I don't leave any if I felt I was ignored or something.

@louievill Correct, service charge is divided equally, I tip my waiter, always.

I think the tip is also shared by every staff just like the service charge. There was one restaurant where the server whispered to give her the tip secretly.

@Alexandoy that's where fights and jealousy usually come in because not everybody is equal, there would always be better servers than others. Sometimes when I sit I tell the waiter to take care of us especially when there are lots of customers and say " bahala na ko sayo mamya" ( I will take care of you later), that would trigger him or her to serve you better, I leave change in the tipping tray but hand a bigger amount to him while he shows us out of the door so others won't see it, the person deserves it.

Even if the bill includes the "service charge" I always tip, this is the habit we have here.

@Alexandoy NOT here, the tips you give to your waiter are not divided among the staff, that is personal.

@LadyDuck that is good. Over here they have the culture of sharing. The rationale is the kitchen people because they have no opportunity to get a tip so they should share in whatever the servers get.

I also did that until I learned that the tip is also divided among the staff that includes the kitchen workers.

I have never been charged a service charge at any restaurant I have eaten at. But if I WERE to be charged, I would probably question what the charge was for, and adjust my tip accordingly. I generally tip 20% at a restaurant.

That 20% is quite high here. Restaurants are now having service charge which goes to the staff.

@Alexandoy It has been incorporated in some establishments here but it rare. 20% so long as service is exemplary is fair.

@porwest I understand the numbers because my grade school classmates told me that when they were here last year. They even used the calculator to compute for the tip that they will leave to the server.

Is that tip like paying backward? Or maybe just natural generosity.

Here I have not seen a service charge on the bill . . . but we do always tip at restaurants.

@Alexandoy If I may ask, about how much is such a service charge? A certain percentage or fee?

It's good if there is no service charge in the bill. Over here, it has become a law that service charge goes to the workers of the restaurant.

@much2say I think the service charge is computed as 15% of the total bill.

It has become customary to give a tip in restaurant service charges or no service charges. If you come out just like that they will give you a look you can never forget.

Over here it is justall right not to give a tip.

Ideally you should not. But I always leave something for the man who served me

That is a good principle because when the service is good, you want to reward the server. But if the food is good, that is not the server but the kitchen people who made it good.

Here usually we don't have to tip to the waiters or waitresses. But in some expensive restaurants, they will charge you about 10% service fee.
