Do You Buy Souvenirs When On Vacation?

I am flying out on a redeye tomorrow night back to Oregon. We've been in high humid 80 degree weather and going back to 30's and lot's of rain. Our time change will shock us a bit too. This is the first trip I've gone on that I have not loaded up with souvenirs and things not needed. Since I've gone minimalist, I've down graded a lot. I still had issues wanting to buy purses or other local fare but I now realized I have no desire. I did buy boxes of chocolate macadamia nut candy for my children (and me) but not going home with stuff that will sit in a drawer. I did buy a cap, straw hat and T-Shirt but none made here. I got the straw hat for my kayaking trip but with the wind wound up getting the cap which was a good call. The T-shirt was to cover my arms to prevent burns since I forgot to bring long sleeves. I looked at a lot of items people buy to take home and the tags have made in China or Nicaragua. I don't know how that will make someone feel from Hawaii. Years ago, my ex bought me two nice lovely necklaces a local lady made while we watched. I still have them. Those do make me feel like local mementos. Do you buy much when on vacation?

When I go on a vacation, local or abroad, I always buy small souvenir items like key chains and fridge magnets. That is my giveaway to relatives and friends.

Magnets are great to get. I have a few on my refrigerator that hold notes etc.

@Alexandoy I used to but now limit and watch what it is since I'm in a tiny house now.

When we were younger we did, but no more in the recent years. Finally what you bring back as a souvenir is nothing that you really need and when you see it in your house it's not even always pretty.

@noni1959 Exactly! It happens all the time "why did I buy that silly thing?".

@LadyDuck I had this Hawaiian brass bell from Oahu I didn't want destroyed and then when I was moving I found it dented and thought it was no big deal as I tossed it. I couldn't figure out what my big fuss was over the years.

@noni1959 In fact I prefer to handicrafts rather than the food. As the food will be finished in a short time, whereas the handicrafts can last for a long time

That's nice of you. I always ask who I like to buy for if there is something they would like. Most say something edible.

@amadeo I remember someone wanting a book really bad so I gifted it and a day later found her selling it on ebay. lol I guess when someone says they really want something I need to ask why.

They sit in drawers and take up space. Giving them to others I've found the same thing. They would eventually sit in theirs as well.

That's a long time without a vacation. We've been concerned with home but we hired a house/critter sitter than knows horses, donkeys, cats and dogs and sent us photos often checking in. We have so much going on in our lives we have to get away even for a couple days.

@crazyhorseladycx That is awful to know animals had no feed or water. This one came very highly recommended and came out a few times before we left.

We always buy something indigenous to the country, such as Chinese ink stamps, garnets from Prague, jewelry from Brazil, leather in Spain and Italy, everything in Paris - lol, silk from China, vanilla beans from Mexico, etc. I tend to stay away from things I don’t love.

@DianneN lol I did all that when I first went to Oahu. I did use the backscratcher. I bought coffee from the Kauai plantation I visited every day. I loved their blends so brought back about ten bags. Unpacking earlier, I realized I bought water shoes for my kayaking. It's the only time I wore them.

@noni1959 We bought Kona coffee, a hula straw skirt, coconut shell bra, Hawaii print shorts and shirts, a backscratcher from the Polynesian Center, and a Louis Vuitton bag that was impossible to get in the US.

I buy those that have a significant connection to the place and are made by people living there like wood carvings, handicrafts and folk art. I see no reason why I would buy stuff made from another country except when the kids were small and we bought things like plastic water pistols. T-shirts made in another country is also fine so long as they have logos or prints of the place I'm vacationing in.

I agree. Some stores like the ABC store, mass purchase items to sell as Hawaiian and they aren't. I stopped at the Maui store here in the airport looking at clothes and they are India, China etc. I see no point in it.

I don't spend a lot of money on souvenirs when I go away but my granddaughter likes to buy little gifts for her friends so I usually help her with those. I might buy a postcard to remind myself of the good time I had but that is all. My friends and relatives don't expect me to buy them anything as holidays are expensive enough as it is.

@noni1959 That's nice. As a child I liked to buy souvenirs, it was all part of the holiday experience. I don't think anyone expects much now but I think I took a box of fudge back to share with my daughter last time.

That's nice of your granddaughter. Mine don't either but I ask them what can I bring and usually they say nothing but if I bring back some nuts to share they are about it. lol All tell me to just have a good time.

I buy very little. I might buy a particularly nice fridge magnet if I think it will remind me of my holiday. They are cheap and light to bring home.

Occasionally, I will too. I didn't this trip. I bought a hat for kayaking and a long sleeve T-shirt to wear on the water but other than that, macadamia nuts.

Depends on where I am going if I will buy any souvenirs or not. Most of the time what I do buy is a tee shirt, not so much nick knack things.

The T-shirts I found weren't made here so didn't mean anything to me. I could have ordered on line.

I am not a souvenir buyer. An occasional tee shirt which is something useful as you wear it.
