I have a poorly eye

As one or two of you know I have a red swollen eyelid which doesn't seem to be getting better and is quite unsightly. Thank goodness I wear glasses so they make it less noticeable. It's not that painful but there seems to be a lot of water coming out of the corner of my eye today so I think it could be a blocked tear duct. Last night I bathed it with boiled water and I think that may have helped a little Has anyone else ever had this and what did you do to treat it?

I am so sorry, I thought your eye was fine today. I had this but it was an allergy.

It seems much better this afternoon. It's worse when I first get up in the morning as it looks really swollen then.

@LadyDuck My eyes tend to be a bit puffy in the morning at the best of times It's still weeping a bit but I think that's what is making it better.

@sprite1950 This is weird, may be that during the night the natural tears cannot flow out and in the morning it is swollen.

I had this last year, and end up going to see an eye doctor due to a clogged gland. But mine was a little different, it wasn't a tear duct, it was an oil gland. All along the tip of our eyelids (both upper and lower eyelids), there are numerous oil glands, and sometimes they become clogged. It happened to me twice in the past few years, and both times they tried to start me off with a low-grade oral antibiotic and topical antibiotic to clear up the bacteria that was blocking the gland. In the first instance it worked and went away; in the second instance it reduced the swelling, but did not eliminate the problem, so I had to go in and have the clog surgically removed.

I think it's called blepharitis and your problem sounds exactly like mine so perhaps I should see a doctor as this is the second time I have had it. How did they surgically remove the clog

@moffittjc OMG I don't know if I could cope with that. I've been looking in the mirror and the swelling has gone down a bit but it is still red.

@sprite1950 Yes, I had both blepharitis and a chalazion (I may have spelled that wrong). The surgery wasn’t pleasant at all. They cut your eyelid open and go in there and cut out all the gunk, then cauterize the gland to seal it off so hopefully the infection doesn’t come back. I wish you the best of luck.

How's your eye now, Linda? I hope it's healed and wasn't anything serious. I've had pink eye when I was younger but I have a feeling that's not what you had.

It's still not 100% although a lot better, I think it is a blocked duct. It doesn't hurt now but if I run my finger across the lid I can feel a slight bump and it's still a bit red on the inner corner of the lid. My inner eye is not affected though.

@Lushlala Someone said I should bathe it with wam water every night because that will soften the oily substance that builds up inside so I think I will try that,

@sprite1950 I'm so happy to hear that! The lump will probably disappear on its own in a few days. At least it's not hurting. Feel better :)

It may be the same with the eye problem of our neighbor. A swollen eyelid or something like conjunctivitis (that's what I heard) that needed surgery and done before Christmas. Now she is doing okay with the recovery.

I don't think it's conjunctivitis because it's isn't too painful. It seems to be swollen around the lash area and feels slightly bruised if I press it. I also had it around a month ago.

@sprite1950 if I were you I would have it checked just to be sure. The eye is a very delicate part of the body.

@Alexandoy I think you're right. It's itching like crazy at the moment and I am trying not to rub it.

Mum would always mix boracic acid with water for bathing sore eyes. I still have a packet which must be x years old but I guess it is one of those things that doesn't go off.

Can you still buy that? I've tried witch hazel which didn't do much good. I think bathing it with warm boiled water is best. If it doesn't clear up in a day or two I will see someone about it.

@JudyEv I'm just looking at it and I think although it is still red the swelling seems to have gone down. I'm starting to look human again

@Hannihar I don't know. I will keep an eye on it and if it is still there in a few weeks I will see a doctor.

If it has been there for long, I´d go to a doctor. If it is a blocked tear duct, they open it easily.

I remember when I was a kid, my parents mixed boric acid with water and I used it with an eyecup. I don’t remember why, but it did the trick. Hope your eye improves. You may have to call your doctor.

It seems a little better this afternoon (it's 3 pm here). I'm just bathing twice a day with boiled water and I think that's helping.

No, I do see an optician once a year but I don't think they would be able to do much for this. I had it once before and it went on its own but this time it is worse.
