Couldn't they afford plates?

One of our favourite restaurants has been closed for a while whilst it was being refurbished after being bought over. It reopened a few days ago so we thought we'd take a look and see what had been done to it - and very impressed we were too! Everything was new, the layout was completely different and it looked much more upmarket than it used to. Normally, my wife and I don't like change but were more than happy with what had been done to our favourite restaurant. We ordered our food from the new menu and waited in anticipation for it to arrive - and that's when things started to go downhill. Oh, the service was quick and the food was fine but we were more than a little taken aback when our lunch was delivered to us not on a plate but on a wooden board! Yes, I know that this sort of thing is becoming more trendy, fashionable and 'cool' but forgive us for being old fuddy-duddies and expecting food to be served on a traditional plate. I suspect that the new management have aspirations in attracting a better class of clientele (they struck out with us!) and are trying to develop a reputation for being an up-market place to go. My wife joked that they had spent so much on the refurbishments that they couldn't afford to buy crockery! We will think twice before going there again.

That does seem odd to me, is it as sanitary as a plate? Maybe I don't know what I am talking about but I would worry that some of the bacteria would make its way into the wood over time. I don't think I would like that at all.

That didn't occur to us at the time but we have thought about it since and if we return to that restaurant (unlikely) we will insist on proper plates.

@ScotMac Yea, I'm no expert but that was the first thing I thought about. I would guess maybe no since the place should have had to pass health inspector and I would assume he/she should know if that is a risk to the customers.

@Bensen32 Yeah, but who knows what happens once the inspector is gone

Absolutely disgraceful. Unhygienic too. That would be a bad hygiene score. Once went to a big dinner at a friend of a friends house and can you believe they served it on a plastic tray? I was horrified and did not eat.

I would prefer a plate. But if the food is good and the price is right.

The food was excellent. The price was a bit more than we would usually pay but being served on a wooden board . . . ? No, probably won't to back

Restaurants come up with some weird ideas sometimes. One we went to had funny shaped plates - probably to take our attention away from the (small) serves.

@ScotMac Oh, that's a bit off. One hotel here used to serve a small mains but any vegies or salads you had to buy separately. That didn't go down well either.

We once went to a really posh restaurant in Edinburgh for a special occasion and the main course we were served wouldn't have fed a mouse! We had fish and chips on the way home

I have also been served a meal on a roof slate (you call them shingles I think). We haven't been back to that restaurant either!

I like dinner on a plate. Trendy is rubbish in this case!

Too bad it has gone a bit downhill. I personally wouldn't mind the wooden board. However, I get that the trendy thing isn't for everyone.

Seems like a wooden board is more expensive than a plate and harder to clean! What were they thinking?

From what I've read, it sounds like wooden platters are quite the in thing. I think you can even get them from Amazon, for entertaining at home

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
