Everyone Needs a Special Pillow

I've been having a lot of trouble with sleeping recently and hip pain. I've seen my rheumatologist for this problem but didn't really get the relief I was looking for. I'm not one to rely on pain pills to get through my day. I remembered a tip I got from the P.A. of my old rheumatologist, whom both retired and set me on a path to finding a new doctor. She suggested that I sleep with a pillow between my knees. I had purchased the special pillow for that but had quit using it. One reason was that the hubby likes to lay his head on it even though it is too small for a regular pillow. Since that is the case, I just got an extra standard size pillow out and used it. Once I started using this pillow every night for a couple of nights in a row, I could tell a difference. In fact, I forgot to take my medicine one night and didn't bother with the pillow (a muscle relaxer) and I woke up in severe pain. I'm getting in the routine now of having my special pillow every night and this pain is back to minimal and I can live with that. I have one leg that is a bit shorter than the other and was given some exercises to do also to help with the pain. I need to get back with the system. I am also going to order another knee pillow! I am averse to pain relievers because it can affect the liver and kidneys.

@Alexandoy I have a contoured memory foam pillow for my head. I also have acid reflux and that is the worst feeling waking up with acid coming up. Yuck.

@kareng my pillow is special because I have acid reflux. It is like a reclining pillow that is high at the end and low at the other end.

That is awesome! I discovered that a lot of my back pain went away once I started sleeping with a body pillow. It really helped a lot

I used to love my body pillow but it takes up too much room in the bed. I find myself moving from side to side, back to stomach all night long now just to be comfortable. It gets old.

@DesirousDreamer Yeah that is a win-win with a cute pillow case!

@kareng It's just me in my bed and a bunch of stuffed animals so I got space for my body pillow. Makes it even better when the pillow case is the cover of a character that I love!

My mother had back problems. A bunch of surgeries and fusions which didn't help. She used her pillow between her knees every night.

It really does help. I'd much rather go that route vs. taking pain medicine if possible. Heck, even if it cuts down on taking some it is worth it.

@kareng I wish I could use one but it bothers me too much and won't stay where I want it to.

Me too. Pain pills are not to be a lifestyle or not mine anyway.

@sallypup I have had sciatica before too. I hate that! That was one of the times I went to physical therapy--to get relief.

I'm glad you found something to help with the pain of sleeping. I tried using a pillow between my knees, but I'm a tosser and it didn't work. I'm glad it works for you and you're almost pain-free.

@just4him I can do this after the pain subsides or calms down.

I'm a tosser too, but I think a lot of that has to be with adjustments for pain. So in the meantime, I'm dealing with the pillow. It's worth it.

@kareng I'm glad it's worth it. I prefer sleeping on my stomach which makes the pillow useless for me.

My husband and I have used knee pillows for a long time. I don't think I could sleep without one. Glad that's helping you.

When I had my back injury from a car accident, and when I had knee problems that led to knee surgery, both times my doctor and my injury rehab specialist recommended using a pillow between my legs. Worked wonders both times. So now, at the first sign of any back or knee pain flaring up, I'll immediately start using the pillow again. Sorta head it off at the pass. Works every time! Well that, and specials stretches I do for back, hip and legs.

I don't think that would work for me. I mostly sleep on my side or stomach.

@kareng I always slept on my side; but the pain from my hips was too great. I had to learn to sleep on my back in the recliner.
