Boy Howdy

One of the discussions from @Juliaacv made me think of the small store near the town where my dad grew up (town named Hoyt), called "Boy Howdy". What was a small town when he was growing up is now even smaller. Boy Howdy was where I just HAD to visit when we'd see my late paternal grandmother. It had a bunch of knick knacks, but also tends to have funny, country items. I have not been in years, but I hope it's still around when and if Amyra gets a chance to visit it. His home town is 3 hours away, so it's not a casual drive. What are some stores you miss, and why do you miss them? Do you like to shop in person still, or are you an online shopper? Any stores you feel should expand, but they never have?

I would probably be someone who would love to wander thru the Boy Howdy shop also, see what there is to see. We used to have a tiny little arts and crafts store in the city close to where we used to live. I remember as a young child my mother would take us kids in there just before we would go away on our summer holiday. They had stock literally piled up to the ceiling, and although it never seemed like a customer could find anything, the owners knew exactly where everything was. My mother would buy us Activity Boxes for the long car ride that we would take to go up north to the cottage. We loved those activity boxes, they were such great fun.

@AmbiePam The boxes were full of little trivial games that you could play alone, but would take some time, or with the 2 other kids in the back seat with you. They were fun.

It sounds like a wonderful little store. Yes, there are stores I miss seeing. The Five and Dime sometimes known as Woolworth's. It was Five and Dime in the city I grew up in.

@AmbiePam It was a nice everything store. Meaning, they had just about everything a person could think of.

This made me think back on my younger days. There is a store in the corner of the main road called Gabby's. That name was used as the reference of that street corner. The store was gone maybe for 30 years now by the place is still called Gabby's.

A lot of our stores are leaving the area but I rarely shopped there so can't complain. My store sells food and merchandise similar tho Walmart so I spend most of my money there.

I miss the a&p supermarket. Because they were cheap. And urban behavior, as they had good but cheap clothes.

I love Kroger for grocery shopping, but for anything else, I usually go to Kohls or Walmart or online. As for missing any store? No, but there is a restaurant I miss called Carmela's. It wasn't in town long, but I loved their tomato basil pizza.

I miss a little local toy and candy store that I visited when I was growing up. I used to go there with my brothers, and later, friends, to buy wax teeth, wax tongues, wax lips, penny candy, and little toys. I wouldn’t go there now. There was a fabulous little shop near our hotel in Paris that we discovered during our first vacation in France. It must have closed or moved, because every time we returned, we looked for it. I never noticed the name, either. They sold the most gorgeous and unique items I’ve ever seen. I love my favorite store, SAKS Fifth Avenue, and wish they were on every corner. I prefer to shop in person. I need to feel fabrics, look at workmanship, and try things on to see how they fit, hang, and look. I do shop a tiny bit online.

That sounds like a great little store. I would love a picture of it, next time you go. I hope you get to make a trip there soon. Stores I enjoy - there was / is a little touristy shop around here called "Treasure Chest". It's got a lot of cheesy tourist type items. I miss Fashion Bug - that was a chain clothing store whose price point and fashions and sizing seemed to get along well with me.

There used to be a store in Potomac Mills, it was called something like Blackstone Minerals or something like that. It had the coolest geodes, gemstones, and different rock collectibles. I really liked that store..but it went out and never came back.

I like shopping online. but just to buy something far more important .. if only to buy staple foods I would rather go directly to the store
