One person's memories of the Nepali earthquake

One of the buildings at the Durpar Square was devoted to explanations and descriptions of the 2015 earthquake. Many pieces of masonry have been salvaged and tagged so they can be repositioned when the buildings are reconstructed. There was also a wall of ‘letters’ written by people, describing how they felt when the earthquake occurred. Some were in English; others in Nepali. The one in the photograph is in English (obviously) and seems to have been written by, perhaps, a younger person, maybe a teenager. It reads: “At baisakh 12/2072. That was a black day of my life. I never expected it. Like seriously I was like ‘Huh!! What happening I think I was like can’t describe in words too. It’s was just a blakest day of my whole life. At that day, I was with my parents (mom and dad) arranging the book bcoz it was a new sessions of new class. Suddenly the earthquake. I was blank. I don’t what happens what to do. So. I just hope. This black day don’t come in my whole entire of my life.” The date at the beginning of the letter is from the Nepali calendar.

This clearly makes us feel the plight of those who actually went through all this.

It is a shocking experience, even a minor quake is a shocking experience. I remember the one we had when we lived in Monte Carlo, your head spins for a moment and then you have the feeling that everything moves around you... and it was not very strong, only some books fell on the floor.

@JudyEv I can easily imagine, because you try to get up from the chair but you feel "strange" as you could not move straight.

You would feel like you had lost all control of your world, especially with a big earthquake.

Looked like the boy was traumatized by the event. It was a strong quake that there were lots of destruction around the place. I think it is understandable that the boy would not like it to happen again since that is something that will stick to your memory all your life. I can relate to that to my countrymen down south where they are constantly bombarded by earthquakes the past few months. I am wondering how they are doing there?

That's a good idea. At the moment, it's just clipped to a length of twine.

I experienced one very minor quake - the full force of a destructive one would be terrifying

@JudyEv yes, a lot of buildings are built on landfill which would just liquify in a big quake

I was thinkng about that in our hotel in Kathmandu. If there were an earthquake there is no clear area to go to - so many buildings every which way and none look very substantial.

@judyev I think it’s the shocking unexpectedness of it all that throws people (as well as falling masonry).

And I think the feeling of having absolutely no control of your life at that particular time.

I hope I never have to experience a large or devastating earthquake. Thankfully, I live in a part of the world where earthquakes are extremely rare. I would probably panic, since I've never been in an earthquake before.

@JudyEv I don't know if you have heard the news about the 7.7 quake near Jamaica and Cuba. They could feel the shaking even in Miami, and people were panicking because they thought Florida was experiencing an earthquake!

@moffittjc No, I didn't hear about that one. Some other myLotter was saying something about Florida never having earthquakes.

I think I would too. You are totally helpless during the quake. I've only ever experienced very slight tremors.
