Jack Chester is a burned-out air traffic controller in Atlanta. He nearly causes a mid-air collision because a radar blip he was following was covered by a fly; and he freaked out because he could no longer find the blip. Rather than getting fired, he is given five paid weeks off. It's summer; so he takes his wife Sandy, and their children, Bobby, Jennifer and Laurie, and their dog, to Citrus Cove, Florida.
Jack's first problem is that he confuses Beach Road and Beach Lane and ends up in someone else's house which is gorgeous. The real owners come home; and they have to vacate in the middle of the night. Their rental home turns out to be decrepit and on a public beach access.
Next, they are all starving and have been waiting in line forever in a seafood restaurant. When they are told that they are "next", Al Pellet, an arrogant local sailing champion, gets their table and their lobster. Jack and Al have a confrontation over the fact that Al got in ahead of the Chesters. Al Pellet will be a problem for the Chesters during the whole time they are in Florida.
If you want to know what happens next, you will have to watch the movie. "Summer Rental" is another good movie that came out of the 1980s. It's not an award winner; but it's a good, solid comedy with the great John Candy. We've probably watched this movie at least a half-dozen times because it is a good go-to movie when there's nothing watchable on TV. There are a lot of laughs; and I would definitely recommend this movie.
This movie is Rated PG.

I do remember that one and another funny John Candy movie Uncle Buck where he is the only one available to baby sit for three kids. Meaning he has to change his lazy lifestyle and be more responsible. Very funny!
