You can check into a place/location on Facebook without actually being there

Facebook allows people to check into places/locations. But you don't actually have to be in that place/location to check in there. You can check into Eiffel Tower, for example, but you are actually at home on the couch. You can even photoshop yourself into pictures of the Eiffel Tower to make it seem like you are actually there. Everyone thinks you are in Paris, France now but you are not. I would never do such a thing but there are people who would. I don't remember the guy's name but there was someone, years ago, who did just that. He checked in on Facebook at all these different places around the world and even posted pics of him in those locations, which he phoshoped himself into. Don't remember why he did it. It was probably for popularity but who knows? Anyone remember this?

I think it's either for popularity or to make people think they have this great life traveling the world when they actually cannot do it.

@lovebuglena Yes I suppose that could be their aim.

@RebeccasFarm My aim's not what it once was.

I don't remember the specific guy you are talking about, but I'm smart enough to know that many people do it to make their lives look more adventurous. A lot of Instagramers and social media influencers do this.

@lovebuglena Some people seek the admiration and approval of others to define their well-being. Or they are attention-seeking. Like, "Hey, look at me and how awesome I am!" I don't know, for whatever reason those people feel compelled to live a false life on social media. I could care less what other people think of me, my happiness doesn't depend on how many "likes" I get on my social media pages.

@moffittjc I am the same way... though sometimes I wonder why this person's post got lots of likes and mine hardly any. Like what makes that person more special than me?

I look at it this way: Why should I pretend to live the life I want but can't have by checking into places or photoshoping myself into pics, which I don't even know how to do by the way? What good would it do me? It would just make me even more disappointed.

That’s funny he did that. I wouldn’t bother doing that personally.

Me neither. Sure it would be nice to see myself next to the Eiffel Tower or the Pyramids, etc. but I am not gonna pretend I was there if I wasn't.

I remember that. Seems a bit bizarre to me, but everything is these days. It's all about getting hits now. Popularity means cash.

Usually, when you check in on FB a list of places come up where you and you choose that. But you can also type in a place and search for it and then select it when it comes up.

I don't remember that. I think it's kind of cool...and funny.

What's cool about making others think you are in Paris or elsewhere when you are actually stuck at home?
