Bait and Switch, Not So Much

Good evening everyone! Hopefully I'll have time to reply to everyone's comments on the past two days some time tonight. But for this brief moment I wanted to share a laugh. The store I work at has a sale on our spring flowers, which are all down one side of our floral section. Other flowers occasionally get mixed in by shoppers who stick things willy-nilly all over the store. which is bothersome, but as long as it is only a few and not a whole cartload we usually just override the non sale stems to the sale price without argument. Tonight I was called up for a lady who had 3 out of a bundle that were non-sale. Before I could even get the words out of my mouth that I'd gladly override the price she was quoting to me that "by law" I have to give them to her. I laughed and told her there was no such law. It was not "bait and switch" or "false advertising" Which is what was being accused, just items out of place. But what made me laugh was her throwing "by law you have to give it to me" before I got 3 words out of my mouth. Why do people always go on the defensive? We are a very "make the customer happy" store and as long as you are not claiming the unreasonable we'll fix a price without being yelled at and threatened.

I don't get why people do that either. Its the same way when people call customer service for any of the retailers, they simply start yelling at whoever answers the phone with even saying hello first. Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Maybe they have run into some not-so-nice customer service people in their lives. I don't know. But as the saying goes, you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar ...... being nice is more likely to get what you want than being mean.

I recognize the sale sign (I think). Sadly, there are some who will try to outsmart the store too (I've seen people try to switch sales stickers on products or play dumb and say "but the sign says . . ." just to get away with paying the lesser prices. I will say there are stores that have crummy customer service, but if this is the store that I think it is, I have only nice things to say about their customer service .

We have people who will peel clearance stickers off clearance items and stick them on non-clearance items sometimes....trying to get something close to $100 for something like $4.99. We probably wouldn't do that. But....a simple sale....yeah we'll override that price no problem. I know service for all stores me be different location to location but we try hard to make the customer happy where I work. (within reason)

@nonersays You can often tell when someone tries to cheat the system - that's just terrible. I didn't know that your store will override prices at times til your post - but knowing that I still wouldn't intentionally take advantage of that. I would so love to work there !

Hah! That makes me think she knew well and good they were the wrong price but included them in her selection any way, in hopes of fooling the cashier or the computer. I would not make it in retail. I would have been inclined to tell her that by law she needed to pay the full price.

Some clients just like to cause trouble over petty issues.

Sometimes. Some people (like my husband) never seem to be happy unless they are unhappy about something.

I think they think that is intimidating.

Very true. Any job working with the public is sure to run into similar things.
