The pedicab is the poor man's transport

We have pedicabs here plying the secondary streets and inside the villages. It is a bicycle with a side car for passengers. In the picture is a sample of a pedicab with 4 kids presumably going to school. I wonder why the government is allowing that kind of transportation here.

@RebeccasFarm that is the issue with those pedicabs, the risk of accident when they are in the main roads.

Especially that passengers are children. If a vehicle bumps it in the rear, that will cause an injury.

There are lots of that here. In our village there are more than 50 together with the same number of tricycles.

The Government probably does not care until someone gets hurt. That is the way it is here.

That is my point in those issues that the authorities are still waiting for an accident to happen before they make a regulation. But in fairness to the authorities, there is a regulation already but the problem is the enforcement.

Those pedicabs look so dangerous, especially for the children. Do those pedicabs drive amongst cars and trucks on busy roads?

Not in all busy roads because the pedicab is actually banned in major thoroughfares like that one in the picture, it is actually a provincial highway.

@DianneN even the motorized tricycles are also banned on main roads but sometimes there are violators.

@Alexandoy I’m happy they are banned on busy roads. It’s awfully dangerous for those poor kids.

It appears as an unsafe means of transport for the kids.

It is really unsafe. But people here are so good with improvisations that they can create such a transport method.

You are right that they are not allowed in the main road. But in the picture is the Cainta junction, it is a main road. The authorities will not act until an accident happens.

Sometimes I pity those thatdrive it since they require a lot of effort to move the vehicle. But it looks like they are thriving business especially in areas where the motorized version are not that plenty.

@Alexandoy True they are environmentally friendly since they do not burn fuel. But it takes a lot of effort from the driver to move it just to earn some money. I have no problem they ply certain routes but for safety I would not recommend them to ply in major roads where fast vehicles are running.

In our village transport vehicles are tricycles and pedicabs. I always ride on the pedicab because it is not noisy. I don't remember the last time I paid the exact amount .

@rsa101 the issue I am seeing in the pedicab is the health of the driver. In our village, most of the drivers are thin. Some of them I know by name since I always give them a tip. There is even one who comes to our gate on Christmas day to ask for a gift (fortunately I always have extra for people like him). Some of them get sick due to fatigue, maybe.

In fairness to the pedicab, that's what I take when I go to the market and in going home. It is a quiet vehicle since there is no engine unlike the motorized tricycle that is noisy.

@rebelann not many people here use bicycle because this is a tropical country so you will sweat a lot. Only the messengers and couriers use the bicycle and at other times only for leisure or exercise but not really for traveling.

You are right with the zero pollution unlike the motorized tricycle. In our village, I always take the pedicab instead of the tricycle.

If they didn't have them, maybe the kids wouldn't be able to get to school at all. Similar vehicles (I think they call them rickshaws) have the passengers sitting in a framework behind the driver, rather than in a sidecar.

Being poor is also the reason of some people here. Maybe that is one factor why our country cannot make progress. It is always the poor that is the reasoning.
