Why coffee is so popular?

I am a coffee lover and most of my friends are the same. I used to have 2 or 3 coffees every day, now it's limited to once a week without caffeine because of my sensitive stomach.
Anyway, I have noticed that new coffee shops are opening everywhere and many of these businesses are successful. They have franchise shops in different areas of the city with lots of customers.
For many years people were drinking coffee but nowadays there is a coffee shop in every corner. And the varieties in every shop have increased, there is a full catalog with different coffee items.
Did you notice the increasing popularity of coffee in your place also?
I wonder how the coffee business became so successful?

Coffee is the so called "waker" here that some people couldn't be active without coffee in the morning.

I remember during my visit in Rome in 2010, I noticed that during lunch break people would go in the coffee shops for espresso shots. It seemed strange for us because my friends and I had the habit of hanging out at the coffee place for hours and the locals would drink their coffee standing, and get back to work!
Best coffee I have tried was in Italy, and many wonderful memories.

Coffee shops not only serve coffee. They serve as meeting joints, dating places etc.
They can be great hangouts for friends as well.

Never. But yes, coffee shops are open for quite long and almost everyday, so overtime must be frequent.

I drink 2 pots of coffee (24 cups) per day @besweet . I've never been to a coffee house because I can't see paying what they want for a cup versus an entire canister of coffee at home.

@nanette64 Yes, it's too much caffeine! Do you get a lot of energy from it or your body is used to it now?
My only advice would be to take care of your stomach, I say this because I have suffered and it takes too long to recover.

@besweet yup, I have a regular drip coffee maker. You'd think I'd be bouncing off the walls drinking all that coffee, wouldn't you? I think it's ridiculous what the shop charges.

I used to drink many cups because I like the flavor, my favorite is cappuccino. What kind of coffee do you drink?
My colleagues at the office also have at least 3 cups every day. I think it's good to have control in our coffee intake every day, too much caffeine is not healthy.

When I was a child, there were not so many coffee shops, as you say. But every house brewed its own coffee. I was given milk with a bit of coffee at breakfast.

@besweet WE only had tea when we had a tummy ache. And no milk then.

@marguicha That's very good advice. The doctor also recommended to avoid caffeine so I only drink one decaf every Friday. The other days it's mostly tea and chamomile drinks.

@averygirl72 What is the concept with the tea milk shops? I don't think I have ever seen one.

Yes, we have three coffee shops here. I'm not coffee drinker, but I love the smell of it. I'm thinking it's popular because it's so addictive. My Sunday school class at my church now has a coffee machine set up.

I love the smell also. Coffe is addictive indeed, sometimes people have headackes and feel very sleepy if they stop drinking coffee. It's interesting that they have a coffee machine at the church, I just remembered that they have one in our church also. They prepare coffee for the occasional gatherings after the church.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, I must have missed the norification.
There are so many varieties indeed. And also different ways to prepare the coffee, all of this makes it very complicated for me. I am always ordering my classic decaf cappuccino and I am happy with it! What is your favorite?

It was a wonderful trip. Italy is famous for the delicious coffee among other things. Are you back for vacations?
