Showing Emotion in the work place?

I don't work outside the house anymore. I have the tv on while I am using the computer and halfway listening to it. One of the news anchors was talking about showing emotion in the work place, mainly crying.
Do you think showing emotion in the workplace makes you seem weaker?
Do you think showing emotion in the workplace should be accepted / not seen as taboo?
I think that as long as the emotion isn't anger, a person should be able to express emotion in the workplace. If the emotion is anger then a person should re-evaluate their need for that job versus their mental health.
What do you guys think?

One thing I don't like about this topic, is people thinking that crying at all makes someone weak. It does not. Even the strongest out there cry. It's part of being human.
Everyone has bad days. And alot of jobs do have you around mean people for hours on end. I don't blame anyone for crying at work, or wanting to.

Yeah, I don't think crying is weak. If I did, I'd be a hypocrite. I'm a really sensitive person who has had to erect a bit of a tough shell or else I would cry at the drop of a hat. I can't tell you how many times I've cried when I was working.

@Courtlynn It's the sensitive type that keeps the world balanced, I think. We encourage others to show their emotions too. Keeping it all inside is dangerous.

@ScribbledAdNauseum right. And MOST people I know are like that too. It's fine. If we never cried we'd be weird and probably kill.

I think it totally depends on the situation and the context. A little bit of that goes a long way.

@RebeccasFarm That's good. Let them see what fear is like. We sometimes have to prove that we are the superior gender.

I agree with Maluse, it depends on the job. I know than in most places it would not be accepted here. I think that the rule is simple, when you are at your working place, you leave your emotions at home. What if you go shopping and all the cashiers and sale persons show a grumpy face and a sad emoticons? Totally WRONG!

I was once a cashier and I can tell you how hard it was to act friendly when several customers have acted entitled and rude, when your boss pushes your break back because it's far too busy yet they aren't out on the floor helping. When you aren't earning very much...
I get it though, I mean as a customer I don't want to be treated rudely when all I am trying to do is buy my milk and bread. I just also understand what kind of a boss most grocery stores have.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Do not worry, this happens with any kind of job. I have gone through very rude clients and I have always smiled even if I had personal problem.
Should I be an employee in a calling center I could cry, no one sees me. And those working in calling centers have many reasons to cry because people are even more rude when they do not see people but only talk to them.

I don't think it is wise to show our weakness publicly

Maybe not, but I also think that we should be allowed to do so. We are all only human, and we all have weaknesses. We shouldn't feel as if we are being untrue to ourselves by holding back because we are afraid to show them.

@amitkokiladitya True, but I also think if we start feeling too emotional at work, we need to decide whether that place of employment is for us. That is why I like working online. It's up to me, and I can be as emotional as I need to be.

Yes, but we are only human. Withholding our emotions isn't good either.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That's right but we have to behave while in public or in our workplace. We should observe social manners and ethics.

I think it's hard to put this in general terms but showing emotion at work depends on the job.

Hmm, yes it is hard to put it into general terms. Different jobs have different stresses....

I think crying in the workplace does weaken your position, especially if you are in a management position. As long as you're not crying at your desk all the time or showing anger, it should be accepted.

I know that management have their own stresses, but I've never been a manager. All I know is that every job I've had, the management usually inspires some sort of emotion out of me ,even if I never show it.

I do not hide my emotions well either. You can see them clearly on my face.
