Where It All Began

A fellow tourist took this photo of me giving a salute to my brother in front of a plane from his final Navy squadron. Photo the property of FourWalls.

Excuse me for a moment, but this is very personal. Today I went back where it all began. In 1967 we went on a vacation along the Gulf coast. One of our stops was the USS Alabama, a battleship that saw action in World War II and was turned into a museum. My brother was mesmerized. He was like a kid on Christmas morning, birthday, and getting a new car all rolled into one. When we left he told my parents that he was going to join the Navy. In 1971, he kept that promise. The night he left for boot camp I told everyone I was going to join the Navy. In 1979, I kept that promise. A trip to the USS Alabama is what started that adventure. The photo above is me, in front of an A-6 from my brother’s last squadron (VA-75). He worked on that plane. The salute is for him, the best big brother anyone could have. Thanks for listening.

It would have been better if my brother had been with me, but given that my sister-in-law needs back surgery that wasn’t going to happen.

Thank you for sharing, it must be emotional to visit those memories back to when everything started. I have a big brother also and I understand the admiration you feel for him. It sounds that he gave a great example.

Thank you so much. I cried when the lady took it, then my brother said he cried when he read this. Just a bunch of softies.
