Frankie J Holden and his Holden

After writing my last post about the closure of the factory that made Holden cars, I was sorting out some books and came across ‘It Happened in a Holden’. The book was published in 2014 and contains dozens of short articles and stories from various people about different Holdens that they had owned and loved. I flicked it open at an article by Frankie J Holden. Frankie was an Australian entertainer and, when he first went into show business, he wanted a quintessential, larrikin-type, unmistakeably Australian name. The FJ Holden was being manufactured at the time so Frankie J Holden he became. He also thought it appropriate as he believed he had been conceived in the back of one of these cars. Many years later, when he was interviewed on ‘This is Your Life’ and was recounting this story, his mother interrupted him saying ‘it wasn’t a Holden. It was a Packard’. At the time of the printing of the book, Frankie still had a Holden and waxed lyrical about it. He will be another lamenting the closure of the factory.

Such an interesting story about his name. I was named for Rose of Sharon out of the Bible.

I don't know how I came to be named. I suspect my sister was named 'Shirley' after Shirley Temple but I don't know that for sure. My Mum had a Rose of Sharon in her garden. It was one of her favourite plants.

I am familiar with Frankie J. Holden. He was Roy on "A Place to Call Home." Typical Aussie bloke.

@JudyEv it does. I remember seeing a Stutz Bearcat in a museum (in Thailand) and finding out there were made in Indiana (where we lived before and after Thailand).

A friend of mine named her son Holden after some football player. That's so funny he thought he was conceived in a Holden but his mother admitted it was a Packard.

I've heard of Packards. I really like that car in the photo, those were made to last a long time.

The older Holdens were easily fixed. Home mechanics found them easy to work on.

@JudyEv A lot of entertainers I grew up with changed their names too. They were told that their original names would not work in show business. Example Marilyn Monroe and Kirk Douglas.

It is probably the norm but then they come up with something like Englebert Humperdinck. That doesn't sound a very likely name for a star.
