Gold, gold and more gold

About a month ago, we attended a wedding in Kathmandu, Nepal. It was a Hindu wedding and very different from anything we’d ever been to before. The bridal couple were from the Brahmin caste which is the highest of the castes or social groups. The women wore very elaborate saris, mostly red and heavily embroidered with gold thread. They also wore a great deal of gold jewellery. Vince spoke to a jeweller and the prices of some of the necklaces and ornaments were in the tens of thousands of dollars. As you can see, the hairpieces were also very elaborate. Gold is highly valued there. Not have a surfeit of gold jewellery, I wore my crystal necklace which my parents gave me when I turned 21. It hasn’t had many airings so I was pleased to be able to wear it to the wedding.

I have Facebook friends who’ve married in India, Turkey, and Nepal. The saris are magical in the fabrics, embroidery, and colors. It’s amazing how much money that gold costs! Right now, gold is at an all time high. I’m glad you had a chance to air your crystal necklace. My hubs bought me one in Venice, but I’ve never aired it. Beautiful photos!

@JudyEv I wear jewelry every time I go out. There’s no reason to hide it in a jewelry box - said my husband.

These saris are very beautiful. In fact the gold jewelleries are also important in our wedding. The bride will wear gold bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings. But I didn't like to wear more of the gold jewlleries as it looks shallow in my opinion.

In Australia, it might have been too over-the-top but at the wedding, everyone seemed to be wearing all they had. Here is the bride showing off her hennaed hands.

@JudyEv She is very beautiful. The hannaed painting is like an art to me. But as I am a near-sighted, sometimes I will make a mistake and think the hands are dirty

In many families in India, and perhaps Nepal, people collect and keep a lot of Gold things. In some weddings, people wear heavy Gold as well. In many places, Youngsters and even 30 plus no longer save for and collect that much gold, but many know that one needs to have a lot for their weddings.

These two women are wearing strands of red with a gold section at the bottom. These seemed to be very popular.

@hereandthere A watch was almost a 'rite of passage', wasn't it? A very special gift. But nowadays there is nothing particularly special about a watch.

@YrNemo Some materials you could see the gold was part of the colouring but others had real gold thread woven through.

@JudyEv I have often tried to understand the weaving technique behind those beautiful fabrics. (As it is, I still don't understand a thing, and therefore, still get fascinated with them .)

For Indians, weddings mean splurging without a second thought even by borrowing! to the hilt ! Weddings used to last but now people have wised up as they do not ensure longevity of wedding bliss! For ladies especially, weddings give them an occasion to deck out in full glory. While in Rome, do as the Romans do! siva

Weddings in Australia can cost a great deal of money too. Sometimes a couple live together and even have several children then they get married and often the father of the bride has to pay for the wedding. I think this is very selfish of the couple if they have been living together as a married couple. And an expensive wedding is no guarantee of a long-lasting marriage.

@Shiva49 Guests aren't expected to pay anything here although if couples have been living together they often suggest money as a gift rather than household items or whatever. Seating arrangements depend on the venue and numbers, etc. I can imagine freeloaders in India might get away with such behaviour but mostly in Australia they would not.

@JudyEv I have been attending weddings here in Singapore. Normally they are held in hotels/restaurants and go by tables seating 10. The guests are expected to pay at least 100 dollars each. So, the cost of food and drinks is mostly offset thereby. I have seen some freeloaders in India who mingle with the thousands at some weddings - siva
