This is the third post about the Nullarbor Links, which is a par 72 course, stretching from Kalgoorlie in Western Australia to Ceduna in South Australia. The eighteen holes are not connected but dotted here and there over 1,365 kilometres. Holes 1 to 7 were dealt with in previous posts. Hole No 8 is at Mundrabilla Roadhouse, situated on the Roe Plains. The area was an important source of sandalwood. It is also the discovery site of Australia's largest meteorite, a giant of some 10 tonnes. Hole No 9 is at Madura and is named Brumby's Run. Madura is halfway between the capitals of Western and South Australia. Madura Station was settle in 1876 and was important for the polo ponies and remounts that were bred there. Hole 10 at Cocklebiddy is called 'Eagle's Nest'. The area has an international reputation for its immense cave system. This unique system penetrates an aquifer some 90 metres below the Nullarbor Plain. Just south of Cocklebiddy is Twilight Cove. Whale-watchers and fishermen flock to this area. The old Eyre Telegraph Station is now home to the Eyre Bird Observatory. Hole 11 at Caiguna is named '90 Mile Straight' as the road here stretches 90 miles or 146.6 kilometres in a straight line to Balladonia. The roadhouse here was specifically built to cater to the needs of travellers going from east to west for the Commonwealth Games. These were held in Perth in 1962. And I'm sure @MALUSE will love some of the place names in this discussion.

There is only a bit of a bend then a whole lot more straight road. It can get pretty mesmerising.

@moffittjc I would if I knew it but (and I quote) No one knows what Cocklebiddy means. It was first applied to an Aboriginal mission which existed in the area. It can reasonably be assumed to be a word from the Mirning Aboriginal language. (unquote). It's a nice Aussie word though, isn't it?

@RebeccasFarm @mottiffjc Cocklebiddy has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? It might be an aboriginal name although it doesn't really sound like one.

That is interesting I don't play golf but I sure would enjoy seeing this golf course. Have you played there?

No. Vince plays golf but we've never really had room to take the golf bag along on our trips.

Thank you for sharing the trivia in your country. Is that meteorite still there and intact?

@JudyEv gee, that one I'd like to see. Since I was in grade school, I was already fascinated by meteorites. There is an antique store here that sells old coins and other objects. There is a basin of pebbles with the label that they are meteorites. More likely it is not true.

@JudyEv Yes, there are. You can find silly names everywhere. Many of Wisconsin's names are derived from Native Americans. I've had a good laugh at times listening to people try to pronounce the names of our cities.

@just4him Many of our names are derived from aboriginal names. Quite often I can tell by a name if it is from Western Australia or one of the Eastern States.
