Dealing with fears

It is safe to say that everybody has some sort of fears. Some of us have more fears, some of us less fears.
I said in some of my previous posts that I grew up being a shy person, with a lot of fears. One of my biggest fears was to speak in front of people, which I have overcome, despite never believing I ever would.
Another great fear of mine, which is still there, is the fear of stray dogs or any other animal which is capable of hurting me. I still don't know how I will be able to overcome this fear.
What are your fears? How do you deal with them?

I'm not scared of much but, like you, I am scared of dogs. The worst thing about it, I think, is other people's attitudes towards it. It's really hard to overcome a fear of something when you're constantly made to feel like you're in the wrong for being scared. There are places I'll avoid just so I don't have to deal with dogs running loose. I can't really think of any other way to deal with it.

@rappeter13 I'm the same. I don't trust that a dog won't hurt me, especially when an owner says "it's OK, the dog won't hurt you". If a person has reason to say that, it's too late to convince me!
Yes, I've heard that about being afraid. Not sure how it explains dogs running up to someone who is just minding their own business and wouldn't otherwise have noticed the dog.

Yes, but you can run into stray dogs can happen anytime. I just don't trust them that they won't hurt me. I have friends who are not afraid of them and they dominate them with this attitude. They say if a dog feels you are afraid of them, it is more likely that they will hurt you.

@pumpkinjam My mind cannot be convinced that the dog will not hurt me. Some dogs cannot be kept in guard, so to speak.

I am more repulsed by every type of reptiles, than afraid.
As for talking in front of a big group, and believe I had huge problems with this, you just need to practice, to convince your brain that it is not a big deal.

Mine is of heights which can get to me depending on the situation.
Fear of dogs is not easy to get over its not like Cesar Millan says.
Perhaps you could go out for walks but with someone who understands how you feel about the dogs and make you feel more relaxed about them.
That way you defuse the situation bit by bit.
Don´t confront the fear ever face to face do baby steps which works best.

I would still give it a try to go out where there are dogs I don´t mean loads of them as I knew the fear of dogs also but the thing was I grew up with them so in the end I lost the fear of them.
My eldest is not allowing his kids to grow up with dogs or to be by them but its the best thing out to cure it.
One cornered my mother when she was having me meaning while she was pregnant and it had got very nasty as she was having puppies too.

My fear of public speaking was overcome abruptly, after many years of huge fear and no progress.
As for the fear of stray dogs, I feel the same fear when I am with somebody who is not afraid, only that I am trust them to defend me. But I could "crap my pants", that is the fear I am feeling.

@lovinangelsinstead21 We have a dog and I love him.
I was many times around stray dogs together with my friends, but the feeling was always the same. Probably, if I would be a more powerful person, that would increase my confidence.

I have lots of fears. I fear that I will have an accident when I am driving, I'm afraid of heights and I fear that something will happen to my loved ones. The list is endless.

Is it a constant fear? Or only occassional?

@sprite1950 I am also a driver who doesn't like crowded cities and unknown places. I have a terrible sense of orientation.

@rappeter13 Heights is constant, I will never conquer that. Driving is often but I'm okay driving somewhere familiar. Loved ones occasional.

@LadyDuck I didn't mean that is genetically transmitted, but I meant that it is coded in your DNA. At least, this is how we talk about such type of problems.

Your fear of dogs is valid, then. I don't know if there is a cure for your fear of closed spaced, that is something genetic, I guess.+

@rappeter13 No, there is not a cure for claustrophobia and it is not genetic.

@rappeter13 The way you have overcome the other fear. I am sure you can do it.

@ExplorewtMe Yes, but the consequences are not the same. If I fail and the dog attacks me, is not the same with the consequences of a terrible public speaking experience. One's consequence is physical, the second one is psychological. I try to avoid physical pain as much as I can.

We don't really have poisonous snakes here, but I am repulsed by every sort of snakes and reptiles, in general.
