Saving endangered species from the bushfires

From time to time, more news comes out about the ferocious bushfires in the eastern parts of Australia. Fears were held for a population of rare bristlebirds in the far east corner of Victoria. These tiny birds are only found at three sites. When the Victorian population was threatened by bushfire, a small team of people flew in by military Chinook to try to capture at least 15 of the 160 birds believed to live in the area.
Instead of having five days to catch the birds, they had a day and a half as the fires were too close for them to stay longer. Three of the birds have since died but the remaining dozen are doing well. The fires in the area are still active and the birds won’t be returned until it’s been ascertained that their habitat has not been destroyed.
Bristlebirds are named for the three stiff ‘bristles’ which curve downwards either side of the gape or mouth. The wings are short and rounded and the birds mostly scamper through the vegetation on strong legs.
The long-footed potoroo and eastern brown parrot were also considered for removal from fire-endangered areas. Spotted tree frogs will be removed in the spring in an attempt to ensure their survival.

I would have thought it would be hard to trap them but they managed it somehow.

@DocAndersen I'm inclined to think it might have killed off some of the species that were endangered. Some species only exist in small pockets and can't really afford to lose any of their number in this way.

@JudyEv Australia has such unique wildlife, I hope the fire doesn't kill off species.

Hopefully this will be the nucleus of a new colony if the others have all perished.

We haven’t been hearing much on the news about the bushfires lately (coronavirus is the top story), and I admit I’m surprised that the fires are still raging. Not good news at all. But at least people are still trying to save the animals!

@JudyEv We have the same issue here in the US--especially in California--where some of the trouble spots are impossible to reach by ground forces. They have to rely on air support to fight the fires in those hard-to-reach places.

I am sorry that the fires are still going, I thought that they were put out. I am happy when I see people trying to save the lives of not only humans but also of animals, especially those at risk like these birds and the koalas. I hope that the situation will be good soon.

@JudyEv It makes it difficult to reach certain places then. I hope they be put off soon.

It's nice initiative to protect your local birds from the bush fires that is making havoc in your area. I think it is our responsibility to make move to preserve them and return them to the wild when the fires has been stopped oce and for all.

Yes, it's a great thing that they have done. We are bound to have fires every year but these were particularly awful.
