Suppose They Don't Speak to You in English

I believe this world was made for everybody to live in it. I know that people speak different languages. I know that it's a small world and thanks to social media networks like Facebook, the world is even smaller. That means that I can make friends with a person on the other side of the world even though English is not their native tongue. I often accept request connections from strangers because it could open door to a beautiful friendship. But when the person I connect with starts posting messages in a language other than English ... like Arabic or Russian or to be honest ... languages I don't even recognize ... I unfriend them. I'm not trying to be mean. But if you looked me up and found my profile and asked to connect ... then you already know I speak English. I'm not going to hit a translate button every time you try to communicate with me. If you asked to be friends with me, then speak my language. Am I being unreasonable when I unfriend somebody who doesn't speak to me in English?

That’s crazy. You have every right to delete them.

I have just one French friend in my FB account. There is always translation option in FB. Of course she posted in French but we communicate in English

I have slowed down on accepting friend requests. I especially agree with you about the fact that if they requested you, they know you are an English Speaker.

I don't think your being unreasonable if their only writing in a language that you can't understand. I think I would do as JJ said, I would ask if they could comment in English, if they can't then you can't communicate with them anyway, so what's the need of keeping them as a friend. I do have friends on there that when that speak to me it's in English, but they will post a lot of things that are in their lanuage. In this case, I don't unfriend them, I block the posts so I do see them.

Yeah. You understand. I just unfriend them. I would like them as a friend. But you can't have a friend that you can't talk to.

I can see your point. If you can't read their language you can't communicate.

Without reliable forms of communication, it is impossible to develop a good friendship. This is how I see things. There is no use to stare at each other not knowing what the other one tries to tell you. The same is true on online world, too.

English should be the universal language to communicate with. Even if someone can speak only a little it is good to make the effort when communicating with someone who does not speak the language they do.

I have very few foreigner friends in Facebook. They were the people I met in forums. One was an Indian who kept on posting about veganism. When he made a "hate" post on meat, I unfriended him. In my posts, it is usually a mix of English and Filipino for the sake of the foreigners.

Sounds like there is no point for either of you if you can't communicate.

It is unfortunate that so few English-speaking people are proficient in other languages, and even worse that so many assume that the world should learn English rather than that they should learn the languages that other people speak. Of course, if two people do not share the same language it is not going to be possible for them to communicate on Twitter, Facebook or any other social medium - unless a reliable translation service is available.

I don't think you are unreasonable at all. I'm not on FB but I wouldn't 'friend' anyone I didn't know. However, I hadn't thought about the possibility of making new friendships with those in other lands.
