Tourists are such a nuisance when you're a tourist!

There I was in Berlin, quite early one morning last October, and I had just left my hotel to start a day's sightseeing. There were very few people about when I reached the East Side Gallery, which was only a few yards away.
This is a preserved stretch of the Berlin Wall that has become an art gallery, with some of the images being particularly impressive.
I thought I had the place to myself, and was about to get busy with the camera, but then a bus pulled up and a horde of Japanese tourists poured out! Their sole aim appeared to be to take photos of each other, standing in front of various portions of the wall. When one had taken their photo, another would take their place and take the same shot but with the first person as the subject. When half a dozen of them turned up at the same place, it took quite some time for them all to finish, taking various combinations of twos and threes, then another half dozen would come along!
This proved to be quite a common experience during my three days in Berlin. There was nothing for it but to bide my time and just be patient!

I had to laugh at your title but I fully agree. The Japanese in particular seem to be very focussed on what they're doing and don't always 'share' very well.

I prefer being the lone tourist and not recognized as a tourist.

I am a tourist guide in the Rhedey Castle I work in.
I see your are from England, so it might interest you. Here are two posts related to that:

I have made clear rules for visiting the castle: the entrance is at every fix hour and it can be made only with the guidance of me or my colleague. So, tourists have to follow our guidance. This way, things you described cannot happen.
Almost five years ago, my life changed completely. I changed my job, but I was not sure it was the right decision. I worked in a mobile phone store before, but...
