What all the fuss was about

My previous post was about having to wait for ages to take this photo! This is probably the best-known image on the East Side Gallery, which is a preserved stretch of the Berlin Wall. It shows the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev showing his affection for Erich Honecker, the particularly unpleasant ruler of East Germany who had been responsible for many deaths of would-be escapers across the Wall back in the 1970s and 1980s. Yes, it is a revolting image - not because it shows two men kissing, but because of what it symbolizes.

I fully agree with you, it is revolting because of what it symbolizes. I am so glad that the wall no more exists. Humans should stop building walls to divide people.

There are two preserved stretches - this one and a short unadorned stretch in the city centre. Both are impressive in their own way.

Oh yes I remember this photo very well. This goes down in history as one of those ferric moments when world world's focus towards Germany with a political insight. I have a Video with me which shows the breaking of the Berlin Wall and people jumping across it to meet their near and dear ones.

I had a good friend who went to Berlin to see it. I regret now to not have been with him.

@Mensch This is true, but at the time it was less obvious, at least at the very beginning when he went there. You had to cross a part of East Germany to reach Berlin, and it was difficult to tell if the motorway would not be closed quickly... But for sure I missed something.

@topffer I think you should really have taken the chance and should have witnessed that great movement in person. It will remain in history as one of the greatest moves to have ever been made in politics and culture.

I have never seen that photo. I guess every historical person must be placed in the context and judged by them.

I agree. A revolting image. When were you in Berlin? (I haven't seen your other post yet so maybe I'll find out there)
