Growing Up Watching?

When I was in elementary school there were three shows I loved to watch: The Cosby Show, Full House, and Family Matters (remember Steve Urkel?). They didn't all air in the exact same years, but rather overlapped. My parents were really strict, but I was perfectly happy just watching those family shows. Of course, at the time, we didn't know certain things about Bill Cosby. Apparently, prior to these shows, when I was three I took to watching Emergency! It was a primetime TV show in reruns during the day while my sister was in school. I would describe it as a very clean, non bloody version of the show, ER. My mom said I would talk to her about the storylines all the time, and Roy and Dixie (apparently two main characters). What did you watch on television as a child? My dad didn't have a TV until he graduated high school in 1972. However, an occasional friend would invite him over, and he loved The Andy Griffith Show.

When I was real young, I remember us always watching The Beverly Hillbillies and I love Lucy and we also watched Andy Griffith. I still know that Beverly Hillbillies song. lol During the 60"s I remember all of us would gather around on Sunday night to watch Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, which was renamed to The Wonderful World of Disney years later. About every week they showed a different movie, then we watched One Atom Twelve and then The Wild Kingdom after that.

They had a lot of great theme songs back in those days. Nowadays, they don't even try.

I was already working when those shows were aired so I had to wait until I retired to see the Cosby show, it was fantastic. Those other 2 not so much. I really don't like Urkel or those twins. I suppose if I'd been able to see those shows back when they first aired I might have found them kinda funny.

We didn't have a TV when I was growing up @AmbiePam I was 12 or so when dad bought us our first one and at that time the only shows I really liked were Bewitched and the Jetsons. Because I was already 12 I didn't go for those Bozo or Captain Kangaroo shows.

Peter Lustig
Hi Amber, I had to think about the answer for a few minutes. As a small kid, I did not watch much tv and most shows are not internationally known. But one of my favorites was "Peter Lustig" which translates to "Peter Funny" where he explained a different topic in every show. It was always a fun way to learn things. He did experiments in his garden, talked to officials of the city and he had a funny neighbor. I will add a photo of him in this comment. And then we also had the Disney Club on Sunday mornings and stuff like that.

I didn’t watch TV during the week. I did my homework and was a reader even back then. I remember watching The Ed Sullivan Show with my parents every Sunday night. I watched cartoons with my brothers on Saturday mornings.

Did I do that? Yes, I remember Steve Urkel even though I wasn't into any of those shows. I do remember Emergency. It was one along with CHIPs I watched all the time. I watched Andy Griffith on occasion. I'm not really a comedy genre person.

We watch a noontime variety show as a family growing up. In the evening, television belongs to my older brother. The popular shows in English language when I was young were The A-team, Nightrider, Full house,The Nanny, Wonder Years, and Doogie Howser MD
