Corona virus or ignorance?

Romania
March 9, 2020 4:13pm CST
Yesterday, the Romanian government has announced that every gathering with more than 1000 people are forbidden. Today, the same government announced that all the schools in the country will be closed starting from 11th March until 22nd March, and probably that period will be prolonged with 14 more days. Football matches are played without spectators. On 15th March, there is the commemoration of the Hungarian Revolution from 1848. Because of corona virus, all events are banned. I wonder what is next? I work in tourism and I think that museums will be closed, soon. If they close everything, they will cause more than this virus can ever do. It is good to be cautious, but we have had many other viruses which have killed a lot more people, and there was no hysteria created. There are much more deaths on the roads, and yet, nobody bans cars and transportation. What is your take on this?

There's also a panic buying of item especially face mask here but we cannot blame them I think "Prevention is always better than cure" they use to say...

Those masks should be worn only by people who are already infected. It does not help people who are not infected.

@rappeter13 On the contrary, I think since we don't know who are we dealing with I think it is better to be protected...

@simplfred No, if somebody who is infected sneezes on the mask, you will touch the mask, and you will be infected. Singapore Health Minister has summed it up well.

The flu has killed more people this year than the coronavirus. I think people are overreacting. Just wash your hands and don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. It’s always important to take care of yourself no matter what germs are floating around.

I cannot rule out that even I will have problems because of it. But it doesn't help if we make the situation even worse. I wash my hand more than regularly, but if everything will be closed, we will have other problems. If nobody will be allowed to go to work, there will be no electricity, no TV news, no internet, no phone signal. How will that help solving the problems?

@rappeter13 I’m worried about two things - health and the economy. I do not want to see a huge recession.

It has to be controlled somehow . . . we try to take measures to keep things from spreading - so this is one way they think they can control it. We try to be on top of it to do the right things (stay clean, etc etc), but not everyone will be as careful - there might be people who don't know they have it - and there might be people who don't care about public health and conceal they are sick so they can do what they need to do. I think we don't know enough about this virus just yet . . . so everyone is trying to be safe than sorry kind of thing. Is it overblown - I don't know yet - we'll see in coming weeks how this all pans out.

@rappeter13 Hysteria/panic is never good . . . we all need to think straight at all times no matter what. I guess I stay in middle ground for now . . . I am prepared as much as possible in any case. But like I said, let's see what happens in coming weeks . . .

there are bigger problems and nobody bats an eye. But the hysteria was created around something which cannot be stopped, this is the way viruses work.

What is scary about this virus is that there is no known cure yet and the infection rate is just fast to spread amongst a large crowd the reason why governments are trying to slow down movement of people around since the virus relies on movement of people to transfer from one host to another.

Don't you think that common flu is spreading even faster? And has more fatalities than this one? There are people who cannot be cured from common flu neither. I guess the same is with corona virus, too, but somebody had the goal to create panic. In time, we may find the answer who it was and what the reason was. Probably money.

@rappeter13 Since I almost always have slight flu I get every year I seem to know how to manage it and find ways to get rid of it. I do not know in your place but I am not aware anyone dying of flu in my country only a very rare cases where the victim had underlying health problems that aggravated it. We have flu shots available too. We have annual Dengue fever outbreak every year but we can manage it too because of the presence of meds that can somehow stop the further damage it can create. With that we have survive the SARS outbreak and the MERS outbreak none of the victims were able to create a local outbreak in my country. Only this CoVid virus has entered my country after applying all the measures we have had during the SARS and MERS epidemic before.

@rappeter13 The numbers may true that the common flu has claimed more lives than this new virus. But they have just started to but they have spread throughout the world already. As I have said we have thwarted SaRs and Mers epidemic before from entering our country. This one it has slipped in despite the same measures were made to stop them from entering our country. The way it spread is something dangerous and should be taken seriously since if no one would try to stop this it could match what the common flu has claimed. I am not encouraging to panic everybody but to make aware that there is danger in what this virus can do to anyone and we should at all cost protect ourselves from it getting on us.

Here the school is close and I don't know when it will be open. And it seems that the restaurants can open but most of them allow take-away food only. As to the museums, bookstores etc, I think they are still close. It is hard to say whether it is right method. But coronavirus has a high infection, perhaps it is better to be careful at present.

In our life we have disruptions. We bark at first because our groove got messed up. But if we live, we get back in the groove again. It could be hysteria. But then again ... And since nobody really knows ... don't they always say people should err on the side of caution. So life as we know it required us to make a few changes. It turns out thise changes weren't needed and it was a false alarm. Oh well! I'm glad I'm still alive to grumble and complain about it! Life carries on.

@cmoneyspinner I touch my face a lot, too. But I also watch my hands a lot. I am a bit more cautious, but I guess we should always be like this. We never know what viruses the people we meet, or the places we visit, have. I am not panicked at all.

@rappeter13 - Yes. Life goes on. But it's official. I am no longer paranoid. I am now in full blown panic mode. 3 people in Austin, Texas, where I live, have tested positive for coronavirus. I knew we couldn't hold it off forever. But I have to admit ... I was hoping!! They keep saying 'Don't touch your face.' And of course, I feel like I need to tie my hands. You never realize how much you touch your face until somebody tells you 'Don't touch your face.' It's a good thing I can type on my laptop. It keeps my hands busy.

@Alexandoy the solution is never the panic. Information yes, but not panic. And we must accept that diseases are part of life, people die from different ailments all the time.

And if nobody will go to work, what will happen? Don't you think that is far worse than a virus that is there and has its way, no matter what we do? Of course, it is sad that people die, but we create more problems than this virus can ever do.

The real specialists should be asked. Like the one who has spoken in the TV in the USA. He said that media is responsible for the panic and they should shut up when it is about serious matters. They don't know facts and spread the panic. I totally agree with him.

I'm all for taking precautions but, as a colleague of mine has said, trying to stop the spread of any virus is like trying to stop water from running downhill. I understand, for example, some care homes limiting visitors because they are full of vulnerable people. Closing public places for cleaning if there is a confirmed case, that's also logical. Trying to isolate everyone and prevent large/social gatherings is simply impractical. In the UK, there is talk about isolating everyone with the slightest sign of a cold 'just in case'. It just gets silly.

Every cold has a potential of killing the victim. There is nothing we can do against this, people die for different reasons every second.

I understand this too. Maybe they should focus on elderly people and people with underlying health problems in self-quarantining, not the general public, since the "elderly with health problems" seems tob e the ones that are being critical. Our economy - global economy - depends on people getting out and spending money.

You can see how many people die from other problems, such as seasonal flu. We should accept that this is part of life, people are born, people die. If we paralyse the whole world, nothing will get better.

I think it is not that dangerous as many other viruses. The mortality rate is 2,4 percent, which is an average rate for any type of flu.
