Short Story: Life needs to be more than just life to be life

John used to like to walk through the wheat fields too. It fed him with life.

John lived remotely on a large cattle station, where he also managed the large cattle farm for the owner. He was getting old, and at 62 now, had done this tough back-breaking work, for most of his working life. He could not quit, as he had bills to pay, mouths to feed. But, as he aged, the work got harder and harder for him, until one day, he keeled over, and had had a heart attack. He died, and went to Heaven. There God quizzed him about his life. "It is ok to work for others, but not at the expense of yourself", God told him. "You should have slowed down, and not worried about placing food on the table, as God would have supplied you with all that you need, but you wanted more." John said, "but I never wanted more, just to keep going with what I had." God said, "What we have haves not the haves of the haves not, but more the have nots of the haves. "Work that out, and so neither be a have, or a have not, just trust life, and slow down when life slows you down, never try to race ahead of life, my friend," God said, scratching his long beard, thoughtfully, with his long-fingered hands. Yes, a dull drudging life of only work, misses out on half of the value of life I suspect, perhaps more than half even.

@innertalks Pity that when you try to inform the person they never seem to see what it is that your trying to show them until it's too late.

Yes, there is far more to life than meets the eye, so to speak.

Some of that was confusing but I like it.

I suppose that could happen if a person becomes overly depressed @innertalks

Yes, if God talks to us, we often confuse his true message to us with our minds, if we do not interpret his messages with our hearts first. This was meant to be confusing, as this was the subtle point that I was making here.

It is a tough call to know when to slow down. I think I managed to do it fairly well - sort of quit when others asked why, and not why not! Sports persons tend to hang on than hang up their boots in good time. I kept in mind to work for a living and not live to work. When we slow down, we acquire a new perspective about life. I responded to one post a couple of days back. After retirement, he was called to help out in the present virus crisis. Most responded to just enjoy the retirement. I commented that the the heart and reality may not agree and it was well received by the writer - siva

Some of us are being forced to slow down now, and to isolate in our homes. Maybe, a few of us will get this new perspective now too. Yes, that's a hard decision to make, but if our country's heart needs us, I guess our heart might feel more connected, if it joins the communal heart, and its efforts too. We might regret not following our hearts, and doing the right thing, otherwise.

@innertalks The present reality is a hit right between our eyes. We feel like gored by a bull leaving us trying to make sense of the present reality. It is not a dream that we can wish away and we have to pick the pieces once the storm blows over. We are now in the eye of the hurricane! We have to stay calm and united - siva

@Shiva49 Yes, it's hard to stay calm, when your job is gone. I heard of one case here in Australia, where, there were queues a mile long, stretching way up the street, of people, waiting to sign up for unemployment benefits. One man walked along the line, and he handed out $100 notes to everyone. There are some good news stories, of people uniting with others like that, happening all over the world.
