Rising prices and supermarket baskets.

United Kingdom
March 26, 2020 5:32am CST
I did manage to get out to the shops yesterday, and luckily, I was able to get most of the things that I needed. But as I was looking around the supermarket , I noticed that on nearly everything that I brought, the price had risen since last week. I also noticed that there were no special offers on anything. This is probably because the supermarkets know that us customers are just grateful to be able to buy what we need these days. I also started to wonder if anybody ever cleans the supermarket baskets or trolleys that we all use to carry our shopping in while in the shop. I certainly hope they do because hundreds of different hand could be touching these everyday.

The prices went up here, too. It is a shame that many try to take advantage of the situation.

I haven't really noticed if prices have gone up much. We just buy what we have to get anyway so there doesn't seem much point in worrying about the cost - beyond a certain point of course.

@JudyEv I could not believe my eyes this morning, there were a few bags of flour on the shelf in the Co-op. Only self raising though but at least it was something.

This is true , we just have to buy what we can get now. Already a lot of products are disappearing from the supermarket shelves. I have not been able to buy flour for more than two weeks. Frozen veg were short last week.

They have sanitizing wipes here in the grocery stores that we can use to wipe the carts.

@lazydaizee I think it's a good idea because those carts have to be crawling with germs.

@simone10 In several of our shops, the baskets are really filthy, I don't think they are ever cleaned out.

Most places around here, even before the Coronavirus, had a sanitizing wipe station available for people to wipe their cart handles and/or their own hands after shopping. Those have actually been around for a couple of years. So, even if no one is physically washing the carts, customers certainly can do it. As for prices going up, I think this is an issue of supply and demand. When demand is high on certain goods and services, the prices invariably go up.

@lazydaizee Yeah, here they've been around for quite a while now. So they didn't really have to add any.

@porwest This is good because now you do this without thinking about it.

You were lucky to have a sanitizing wipe station at your supermarkets. They did not do anything like that here, until now that is.

It did not take them long did it. I expect other services will raise their prices too, like TV subscriptions and internet providers.

The trouble is that the supermarkets know that we need groceries now, just because there may be shortages in the weeks to come.
