Cowboys and Indians, and masks

It was suggested that I might like to read a post about making your own face-masks. Danielle (@VivaLaDani13) suggested the discussion written by don’t look back (@hardtimes1958). This is a good idea if you think you need to wear a mask. On the bus in Kathmandu I couldn’t find my mask and I folded a mansize handkerchief in half, into a triangle, and tied the ends behind my head. Maybe not very effective but it made me feel better. I used to do this years ago and I was trying to remember why then it struck me. It was when I played cowboys and Indians, well before spacemen became popular. Western films were very popular and the cowboys would have a triangular mask over their noses. I can’t remember if they all did or just the baddies. Anyone old enough to remember? The photo is of our son. I’m sure he was a goodie cowboy.

What a cutie! I certainly remember dressing up and playing cowboys, cowgirls, and Indians (Native Americans) with my brothers and the neighborhood kids. Sounds like a good idea if you don’t have a mask. We also used something similar in the Sahara when it got windy one morning.

I used to play that too. A zillion years ago, when Cochise was an Indian.

We'd have stick horses too and have to tie them up etc if need be.

Oh yes, I remember all those westerns we'd watch, I rarely had a say in what was on TV so if everyone else wanted to watch a western then I'd get stuck watching it too. I use face masks all the time particularly when I have to clean that litter boxes .... oh good grief, I knew I forgot something I use a long kitchen towel sometimes but that gets a little complicated when it starts to come undone.

Every second film at the drive-in would be a Western.

We didn't go to drive ins much @JudyEv back then mom didn't squander money unless she had to, dad did buy us a TV in 1962 though so we had that and just about every other show was a western or had something to do with WWII.

@rebelann It's funny how the shows went in cycles. Medical shows were really popular for a while, then cooking shows, DIY shows, etc.

Only the baddies wore the masks. I remember those long-ago days too.

There is one television station in Lake Charles called Grit that carries the classic western movies.

Yes, I sure do remember! And dressing up like a cowboy was great, to me. The red handkerchief tied across the nose, probably to keep the dust and dirt out of their breathing tubes. Also, I dressed like Superman with a towel safety pinned around my neck, flapping as I ran like crazy! LOL Your son looks so cute, what a sweet picture

@JudyEv My brother and I dirtied more towels, than the rest of the family all put together! Being a 'super hero', requires a lot of bathroom linens

@JudyEv That is nice of Dani to promote the post from Don't Look back about making your own masks. I have seen people here that do not have masks use their scarves. I have a mask so wear it when I have to.

I actually do this. After wearing a surgical mask, I put a handkerchief folded into a triangle over it. It serves as an extra protection.

@JudyEv true. Any form of protection is better than no protection at all.

I am using a simple mask when I need to go to the shops for buying essentials. I wash and reuse them. I tried to ordered N-95 masks but they were unavailable online. I checked the discussion and it is heartening to see people standing up to tackle this global menacing epidemic.

I think a simple mask is better than no mask. Some are making their own now.

The bad guys would certainly wear the masks when they were robbing a bank or a stagecoach, or committing some other crime, to help hide their identify. But both good guys and bad guys would wear them while riding their horses to protect themselves from all the dust kicked up by the horses.

@judyev We did that when driving dusty roads in Africa but always had to whip them off if a vehicle was coming the other way because such things would have been frowned upon by officialdom. It made us feel very Wild West.

I think I was the bad guys who wore the masks. So they couldn't be identified, I assumed. I wonder if good guys did during a dusty cattle drive.

I believe th ecowboys wore their masks to hide to identity or to look more scary and fierce. Or maybe it is a fashion statement. Ha ha I dont know aswell. Nice photo of your son in cowboy hat.
