Happy Easter

Good morning my friends I would like to wish you a very if somewhat unusual Happy Easter kept away from family due to our unusual situation in the world. No Easter egg hunt today unless you have small children at home. No meeting with family for a delightful Easter lunch and no going to church to celebrate Easter. Easter is one of the most important events in the church calendar. Some services will go ahead with empty churches but available online instead. Hopefully you will have an Easter Egg. Traditionally eggs have been a symbol as a celebration of rebirth. Ancient Egyptians used eggs to celebrate the New Year which was sometime in Spring. Christian use of the egg to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In central Europe people used to paint eggs by dying them in vegetable dyes. Red with beetroot, Green with spinach and Blue with Red Cabbage. On Easter Sunday everyone would have one of the colourful boiled eggs and would knock their opponents egg until the shell broke. A little like a game of conkers. Some eggs would be made out of wood. The most famous of Eggs came from the time of the Russian Tsar. He commissioned Faberge to make eggs for his wife every Easter. The eggs would be made with precious gold and gems. Once opened they would contain a surprise such as a mechanical working bird, flowers, train or carriage. A different design would be made each Easter for the Tsarina. They would also be given to other Royal families abroad as elaborate gifts. In St.Petersburg there is a Faberge museum with many eggs on display. The evening I was due to go there it was closed due to an economic summit being held there. However I have seen one at Buckingham palace when they displayed some of the Faberge collection owned by the Royal Family. I am sure our eggs will not be so elaborate or as expensive. I asked one of my young relatives if she would be keen to receive an Easter egg from any Easter Bunny during this Covid-19, she made a face, 'No way!'

Those elaborated eggs are beautiful. I do not remember where, I had seen some "fake" Fabergé, but they were really very well done and pretty. I am sorry I did not buy. Happy Easter to you and to your family Gary, I know you miss your daughter and your grandchildren, but I hope you are enjoying a Happy Day.

@LadyDuck Oh yes you are right Anna. Physical contact is so very important. I am saddened to think that people with Covid 19 die without their family by their sides that must be so horrible. Bad enough being ill but without your loved ones being with you is worse. I would not want my family to see this!

Yes we are missing them although this afternoon they drove past in the car so we could wave to them and they did to us! It is a sad time not being able to give them hugs!

@garymarsh6 I haven't been to Russia, but three times to the Soviet Union! The first time I was in Moscow for three weeks as a student for a language course. The other two visits were with a group of pupils who were learning Russian at a secondary grammar school. We stayed in Moscow and (then) Leningrad for three or four days each. --- You read my post on Leningrad which I wrote three years ago.
Every year in the middle of June I remember a special night in Leningrad. I used to teach Russian at a secondary grammar school in Germany and went to Moscow...

Funnily enough this time last year! We were only in St. Petersburg for two days. We did not go to Moscow. You can go to St.Petersburg for 72 hours without a visa as long as you have a local company giving a tour. I think the visa these days is around £180 Euro 204. We went to all the grand palaces, Hermitage and the Ballet. It was fantastic. I could have spent a week there.

@MALUSE Interesting times I think things are quite a bit different now. There is certainly more money and people look happier than they did back then! I went to speak to students at a university they were wide eyed about credit and debit cards and wanted to know all about the pop scene.(Wrong person to ask there as I didn't really follow the pop scene). They were very interested and inquisitive.

Happy Easter to you. This one really isn't any different from any other since my mother passed. She was the glue that kept us together. But that's ok... less fuss, no muss.
