Handing out our handout

Vince has been to Nepal three times and has some good friends there now. One family belongs to the highest caste and have some backing behind them. Another girl, we’ll call her Monica, is not so lucky.
On the second visit, he took several Australians with him to visit Monica and her family. Some of them have visited her on other occasions. For a couple of years now, we have been paying the school fees for the girl’s nephew.
Because of the coronavirus, seniors in Australia have received government handouts. We earmarked half of ours for next year’s fees for Neev, the little boy but have since discovered that the situation in Nepal is dire.
We found a way to send money to Nepal without wasting heaps of it in fees. Vince’s Australian friends and ourselves have now sent money to Monica.
Here is what she is doing with the money. Some has gone to a single mother who was on the point of starving; she has bought supplies for her husband’s grand-mother who had no food, she has bought essential medicines for her husband and father-in-law, both of whom are diabetic, and with the rest, she is buying supplies for her own and her in-law families.
Hopefully, this will tide them over the worst period. Once again, I’m counting my blessings.
The photo is of some school-children in Kathmandu.

You all are such a blessing. I had to watch a video for my class today called, "Challenging the Cultural Stigma of Disability in Nepal." The more rural country people seem to suffer much more with poverty. The Rose International Foundation, founded by Rob Rose, is one I'm going to be sending donations to.

The mention of starving reminds me of some neighbors renting rooms in the compound here. Many of them lost their jobs and there is no financial aid from the government even if it was on the news since 2 weeks ago. I wonder how those neighbors survive now on their own. They have families to feed.

@JudyEv well, there is nothing much we can do although I know that you are doing your share to help. This is a very sad situation.

That was such a wonderful thing to do with the money you received from the government. I'm sure the people of Nepal that you helped are very grateful for your generosity.

That was perhaps not the way your government wanted you to spend this money, but you can be proud of it. Are people also confined because of the virus in Nepal, or is it because of a hard winter or something else that they lack of basic things like food now ?

I know we were supposed to 'stimulate the economy' but we have no need of anything and these people are starving. The country is in lockdown because of the virus; there are no tourists; I think all the people we know have lost their jobs and I don't think there is anywhere for them to go to to get help.

we were surprised to receive "relief goods" 3x now. we know the barangay tend to prioritize the depressed areas here. we will be dividing them between my 2 brothers and their respective families once the lockdown has been lifted.

Glad you found a way to send it without losing a bunch in fees.

@wolfgirl569 It's the banks that are taking the fees in this case. There are at least three banks involved because ours doesn't have branches or links to Nepal so they have to use an interim bank which also takes a bite out of the money.

my handout went to pay off medical debt, so that we have more freedom to tighten our belts a little.

@JudyEv yeah, that's a big deal, and that money will cover a month IF NOT less for a lot of people. Wife and I are lucky to still being paid
