Taking Care of a Couple of Chicken Makes Me Busy

Taking care of a pullet and a cockerel that my nice game me last week makes me busy amidst this extended community quarantine (ECQ). They are of a native variety, which my husband said could be a meat source in this time of crisis; but I didn't buy that idea. I just wanted to keep them as pets. I made a small housing, but I allow them to roam in a portion of our backyard just like what a free-range chicken should be. Do you also like the idea of raising chicken for food?

It is common in the rural areas; my parents did it too!

My mom does know how to raise chicken for food. The meat will be better than sold in the traditional markets I supposed.

Yes, it is better to raise your own because you can feed it natural feeds like corn grits, fish meal, copra meal mixture. Vegetable cuttings and grasses. No chemicals!

I cannot slaughter and eat what I took care of although my wife can, but even if she has slaughtered it still I cannot eat it. Perhaps I can raise them for eggs. I use to raise and breed fightingcocks when I was young and single that's probably the reason why I cannot eat them.

I can't eat it too; yes, maybe the eggs. It's some sort of attachment that prevents us from eating it as meat.

@acelawrites that's my problem even with my children, they will cry till you put off the execution of the animal, that happened with Turkeys I bought, they were hard to maintain because they ended up as pets. It's only my wife who knows how to kill, kill, kill

I also love taking care of loose chickens but cannot do it anymore since we have dogs in the house. There are many loose chickens in the neighborhood.

It is not allowed in our subdivision to raise it for livelihood, only one or two as pets.

It would be so hard too; I'll just keep them as pets for eggs.

No. I don`t like raising chicken for food. I just want to buy finished product and not thinking of how to kill it and be a food.

Back in the days, we had cages for chicken. The hens are free to roam around with their chicks.

I don't know if I could do that because like you, I'd probably become too attached to them to ultimately kill and eat them.

It's a good idea if it is necessary. At the moment we are able to buy any meat we need.

We could also buy online, or go to the grocery, but we avoid going out these days.

Yes, it is good if they have a bigger area to roam and feed; we have a limited space and it is not allowed here to have pets straying around.

@acelawrites It all depends how old the hen is.
