1777 - Sybil Ludington, age 16, rode 40 miles (64 km) to alert American colonial forces to the approach of the British regular forces.
1803 - Thousands of meteor fragments rain down from the sky in France. This event convinces European scientists that meteors exist.
1933 - Carol Burnett was born. She is an American actress, comedienne, singer, writer and producer. She is best known for starring on the television show, The Carol Burnett Show from 1967-1978. It was the first comedy variety show to be hosted by a woman. Some of her movies: Pete 'n' Tillie, The Four Seasons, Annie and Horton Hears a Who!. In 2019 Golden Globes named an award after her for career achievement in television called, the Carol Burnett Award; and she received its first award.
1989 - Lucille Ball passed away. She was born in 1911 and was an American actress, comedienne, model, entertainment studio executive and producer. She is best known for starring in I Love Lucy from 1951-1957, The Lucy Show (1962-1968), Here's Lucy (1968-1974) and Life With Lucy (1986). She and her husband at the time, Desi Arnez, also starred in comedy TV specials, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. They divorced in 1960.
