Getting my car "smog checked" today. Wish me luck. Do they have "smog checks" where you live?

Because my SUV, a 2008 Nissan Xterra, is "older," I have to get it smog checked every other year before I can renew my registration. I called around today and found out that some places will charge up to $99 for a smog check (for my particular vehicle), while others charge only about $50. So if you need your car smog checked (do they do that in less regulated states? I live in California), make sure you call in and get the best price! I will be spending $48 today (if I pass).

The state will have some big balls to ask for smog checks this year when people are driving very little and financially hurting but it is California where the air we breath would be taxed if they could get away with it.

I suppose California is as close to a "Socialist" state as there is in the US.

@JohnRoberts In a sense, the air we breathe is taxed. We pay more for gas than anyone else. In a way, it's an OK thing. I remember LA being way smoggier in the '80s than it is now.

There is only ONE place for each Canton where we can go to have the smog checked, it is an official government site. Our car is new, the first 5 years we do not need to go.

@TheHorse We have a sticker that indicates the "pollution rating" of the car. Diesel cars pollute more, they must be checked every year. All the cars built before year 2000 must be checked every year too.

It may be the same here. It's every other year for "older" cars, but I forget what constitutes "older."

@LadyDuck Do you have to pay more taxes if the pollution rate is higher? Here it's pass/fail.

We only have emission checks. Don’t know what a smog check is, but this is not the time to have anything checked.

Do you have to do it to renew your registration? It might be the same thing.

@DianneN I think emissions checks are probably similar to our "smog checks." In CA, you have to have one every other year (once your car reaches a certain age) when you register your car for the next year.

I'm with Lori. They should all charge the same. No smog checks here. "E" checks in Ohio.

What are "E checks"?

@TheHorse Here's the technical explanation: The E-Check tailpipe test measures your vehicle's emissions under various operating conditions. It is designed to measure levels of hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Vehicles will be required to meet emissions standards established for the year the vehicle was manufactured.

@LindaOHio Interesting! Thanks for the info. That sounds similar to what they do here.

The states are in need of BIG MONEY, so they will certainly not stop that "car smog" thing.

In the US, some states allow more personal freedom than others. I always have a sense of safety and freedom when I travel and "escape" California.

Here in NC a few years back they implemented a tailpipe test where the stick something in the tailpipe to see how much emissions is coming out. It has to fall within a certain range. Funny thing not all 100 counties have it as a requirement. Our county doesn't but the 4 surrounding ones do. I think it's a flat rate fee of $99 no matter the county

That's pretty expensive! I tried to pay my renewal fee today by credit card, but the site was down due to to Covid-19.

@TheHorse That is good. I do not have a car here. I have a mobility scooter and have to get repairs every so often but need batteries around every 6 months.

Wow, that's pretty costly. We do have emission tests here and they're required if you're having your car registration renewed.

Same here, but only if your car is over a certain age. As I mentioned to Anna I can't remember exactly what that age is.

@TheHorse I think it is a problem near every big city. Thankfully I am not downtown, so pollen is the worst problem I experience.
