Getting my car "smog checked" today. Wish me luck. Do they have "smog checks" where you live?

Because my SUV, a 2008 Nissan Xterra, is "older," I have to get it smog checked every other year before I can renew my registration.
I called around today and found out that some places will charge up to $99 for a smog check (for my particular vehicle), while others charge only about $50.
So if you need your car smog checked (do they do that in less regulated states? I live in California), make sure you call in and get the best price!
I will be spending $48 today (if I pass).

The state will have some big balls to ask for smog checks this year when people are driving very little and financially hurting but it is California where the air we breath would be taxed if they could get away with it.

@JohnRoberts In a sense, the air we breathe is taxed. We pay more for gas than anyone else. In a way, it's an OK thing. I remember LA being way smoggier in the '80s than it is now.

I'm with Lori. They should all charge the same. No smog checks here. "E" checks in Ohio.

@TheHorse Here's the technical explanation: The E-Check tailpipe test measures your vehicle's emissions under various operating conditions. It is designed to measure levels of hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Vehicles will be required to meet emissions standards established for the year the vehicle was manufactured.

@LindaOHio Interesting! Thanks for the info. That sounds similar to what they do here.

Here in NC a few years back they implemented a tailpipe test where the stick something in the tailpipe to see how much emissions is coming out. It has to fall within a certain range. Funny thing not all 100 counties have it as a requirement. Our county doesn't but the 4 surrounding ones do. I think it's a flat rate fee of $99 no matter the county

Wow, that's pretty costly. We do have emission tests here and they're required if you're having your car registration renewed.

@TheHorse we bought one of our cars in June. They let us know that we had until August to get the test done now.
