Grandbaby geologist

My four and a half year old granddaughter loves rocks. Like most kids, she would bring them home in her pockets from the time she could walk around the playground. With our communication being limited to Facetime right now, I've been trying to come up with ways to "virtually babysit" one or two of the kids while my daughter cooks dinner, does laundry, etc. Last week I played a couple of songs that I use in my classes (I'm learning to teach music online too, figured I might as well use that) and that held their attention for about 30 seconds. Today I brought some colorful children's books, which they enjoyed, but kept being distracted. I couldn't tell if they were actually listening or halfway across the room, although they kept asking for more. The two-year-old went off doing something else and suddenly I said to the older one, "Want to see some of my rocks?" (I have a cool rock collection I inherited... lots of real beauties.) She leaned into the camera and watched, entranced. I held her attention for 20 minutes. That was amazing. Halfway through, I heard her say to the other one, "Shhhh! Grandma's showing me her rocks." We only quit because her battery was running out! So, I'm hoping I can steer this girl toward science. Her dad loves space science and I love geology, so that would be great!

It is so wonderful that your granddaughter has a love of rocks. That would be awesome if she goes into a science career as she grows older. I know there is a big push here in the US to get more girls interested in science and math fields, as they are still male-dominated professions. Keep her interested by showing her more and more rocks! My son used to be fascinated by rocks when he was little. Every year, when I asked him what he wanted for Christmas, he would always ask for a bag of rocks! haha

Well, a bag of rocks would be a cheap present! I also am hoping to scoot more girls into the STEM fields. This is of course helped by the fact that half of the science teachers in our upper school are women. I can also help by being a music teacher who loves to talk about volcanoes and earthquakes. I even wear my volcano GeoPark shirts (that I wear when volunteering at the Sakurajima Visitor Center) to class. Kids love it.

@moffittjc Yes, I've been studying volcanology for fun. I translate at Sakurajima Visitor Center in my vacation time.

I also collected rocks when I was a child. I am glad your grandchild was fascinated by the rocks.

That is so cool! I love it, and especially when I hear little girls getting into science of any kind.

Hoping to encourage that.

That's a cool collection! Good thing you can do some virtual babysitting.

Virtual babysitting works better with the older one. The two-year-old, even when I'm actually in the house, wanders off to Mom after about half an hour.

@petatonicsca Yeah. It's hard to run around with toddlers.

What a nice time you had with your older granddaughter.

Yes, I think it helps to have a plan before getting on a video call. Otherwise it's just random since she doesn't have much to talk about, there being no kindergarten right now.

No wonder, it is in the genes:)

My daughter is adopted so it's not my genes... but maybe my jeans

How creative of you to share this, good job. Are your grand kids far away from you?

They're over an hour by train, which means I am not going to visit them for a long time. I have no desire to get on a train during a pandemic. Facetime is way better.

That is so cool. My mother has a love of rocks. Everywhere we go, she always looks for some unique rocks.

Isn't it funny how some subject draws in particular children? It's good you found something that has her intrigued.

She loves taking care of people too (like her little sister)... maybe she could be a doctor or nurse or physical therapist or something. (Or geologist.)
