It was a very strange response

You must by now have seen the clip of Donald Trump walking out of a press conference because he didn't like the question he was asked by an Asian-American reporter. Her question had to do with why Trump wanted to make a competition out of the number of Covid-19 tests being offered to people. What difference did it make whether the United States was testing more or fewer people than other countries, given that the real problem was the fact that so many Americans were dying from the disease? It is a legitimate question, and there were various ways in which Trump could have answered it. He could merely have said that he was only stating the facts of the case and was not trying to derive any sort of pride from the state of affairs. He could have said - on the other hand - that it was important to show that the country was doing everything it could to beat the disease by testing to such a level. Whether anyone would have believed either answer is a matter for debate. However, his actual response - "you had better ask China that question" - was utterly bizarre. It was bizarre firstly because he chose to take offence at having the question posed. It was a "nasty" question, he said, probably because it sought to make him make some sort of admission. But, secondly, why on earth would anyone in China be able to state the reason why Donald Trump was acting in a particular way? This response was completely illogical. As it happened, Trump then went completely off the rails by calling another questioner then refusing to let her ask her question - before storming off. How he thinks that any of this behaviour is going to improve his re-election chances - which is what he really cares about - is anyone's guess.

@indexer I must remember that response for the next time someone asks me a question I'd rather not answer. "What do you want for dinner dear?" "You'd better ask China that".

I saw that and just CRINGED. BUT the man's got his supporters in whose eyes he can EVER do any wrong. It's incredulous! In the UK, he'd be forced to resign, the amount of foot in the mouth utterances he continues to spew. Just madness.

I think you're right. Of course, in the UK and other Parliamentary democracies it would be impossible for somebody with absolutely no experience of politics to find themselves leading the country. I have long held serious doubts about the wisdom of the US Constitution and the Trump era only reinforces my doubts.

@indexer You took the words right out of my mouth. Although, if we're to believe various US sources, he didn't actually win that vote. But how he actually 'stole' it is beyond me. US law and politics are beyond my comprehension, they never cease to shock me.

@Lushlala He did not win the popular vote but the Electoral College is what counts. That is another aspect of the Constitution that I find very odd. You are electing a President for the whole country, so why should how the votes fall in individual states have any bearing on the outcome?

I do hope that even his supporters (I don´t know why they support him though) become aware of the shame of a president the US has now.

I don't watch his full conferences anymore, and sometimes not at all. He also has a bad habit of dismissing a question or opinion because of the network / newspaper that the the reporter represents. I've heard him answer questions with a series of prepositions and nouns that make little to no sense, and certainly do not answer the question asked. I do not believe it is some sort of tactic either, simply his natural fumbling response.

He is not the only politician with a gift for not answering the question - you should try Prime Minister's Questions in the UK House of Commons, for example. However, at least our politicians respect the people asking the questions.

@indexer True, politicians have avoided questions for quite a lot of years before Trump came along. I do think, however, that he is the first to be so disrespectful to people in general, not just the reporters.

Trump won the last presidential election campaign by his anti-traditional and non-mainstream style as a politician, wasn't he? People play politics play tricks. The traditional ones will react diplomatically, but Trump will act recklessly and care for nobody. Maybe voters are tired of the hypocritical mask, and choose a different one who is more real.

Perhaps they will want a President who actually "presides" instead of watching TV and sending tweets all day.

I’m not an American and as an outsider, I find Trump’s response to the pandemic utterly bizarre. He kept giving contradictory statements and he sometimes acted like a baby especially when reporters asked him difficult questions. He’s really not a war president. All he does is blame China, blame WHO and everybody else instead of trying to find solutions to the problem.
