My Covid-19 Story

Today is the 13th week since I was last at work. In that time I have spent the majority of it in this place I call home. Yes, my company started the process of closing the business in January of this year and my position was ended on 28 February, 13 weeks ago. I started right away to look for a new job but then on March 11th the country and many states started to tell people to stay home if they could, due to the Covid-19 virus. It was like over night my chances of finding some new job dried up. Every company that was looking for someone with my experience at my pay scale stopped hiring. I thought then, it might be a few weeks or something. Then on 21 March, Illinois, a neighboring state, ordered the closing of businesses and the stay at home order started there. On 24 March, Wisconsin followed with the same orders. I tried to stay positive and thought well how long can this last, a couple weeks and things should get back to normal. Well March ended and April came and went and here we sit on 15 May and I’m still sitting in my house. Business are still closed for the most part and the only places hiring right now are retail stores and delivery companies. As of 13 May, Wisconsin is starting to open up. Per the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the stay at home order has been lifted. There is the catch that local cities and towns and counties can still make the call on what reopening means. Also, each business can make their own call if they want to open back up or not. There are still many restrictions that have to be followed but it does sound like we are moving in the right direction to get back to “normal”. For me personally is still the question of when companies might get back to hiring new employees. What that job market might look like and how will business be conducted now. When it comes down to it, I will take what I have too when I need to. When it comes to keeping food on the table and a roof over my head I am not above taking any job but to get back to what I was doing, I’m not sure how that is going to play out. I know many fear what the future holds for them due to all this. I know there are people who know they have a job to go back to eventually, there are those that are not sure if they have a job to go back to and then there are those that know they have no job to go back to and need to find a new job. Much of the worry is the unknown, how much of a risk is it to get back out there? Those are things that we are going to find out one way or the other, for good or bad. It comes down to, are our politicians and medical experts right, are they making an informed decision on all the facts, are they taking our best interest into consideration or are they doing what they think is best for their career?

There are lots of “now hiring” signs in front of businesses here.

@Bensen32 — right now, most retail is still closed; however, those who are open are hiring. Many are restaurants. And they have $11 an hour signs up. I can tell you that I ache for the people who have such uncertainty now and pray for you all daily.

Yea, are they all retail? We have a ton of those but minimum wage is not going to do it for me.

It must be rough to be in that situation..I wish you the best. I started my social security in Feb of this year, Thank God for that, otherwise I would be up a creek too. of course I have my boarder here, but I still need to have additional income..so now I don't have to worry too much..I would like to get back to doing some mystery shopping though.

We have some 600,000 unemployed at the moment. It's not a good time to be looking for work.

No it is not the time to be looking for work. I have a feeling I will be settling for something outside my normal field of work at least till I can find something and who knows how long that will take.
