Great to see the school uniforms out

Japan
June 1, 2020 4:58am CST
Today was the first day back to class for public school students in the greater Tokyo area. Since I am still teaching online from home, and our school will continue online, I got to see our neighborhood kids heading off and coming back. They will have shortened days for the first week or so, with no lunch at school. They all looked very cheerful walking to school with their friends. They had masks on but were not 6 feet apart for sure. I hope the masks will do the job. Are schools back in your area?

students wear uniforms here, too. they are eager to go out and be with their friends so they forget to keep distance.

I can't even imagine trying to have kindergartners keep social distance!

Probably post July, but I am sure this time kids would feel more excited about going to school....

One good thing is that many kids will be happy to go back to school.

I think so too, but Japan has brought down the cases. They are ready to close down again if necessary.

No, in my area schools are not back yet but now they will enter summer holiday season so there would be no point in opening schools at this point. They will probably be re-opened in september when school education starts again. Do you have this thing called summer holiday for schools in Japan?

My international school goes till mid-June and then starts a new school year in mid-August like many other countries, but Japanese national schools start in April and have six weeks of summer break, then go till mid-March. I have heard that they might not get summer break this year.

Expecting small children to keep their distance from each other is pie in the sky thinking really.

many schools reopened today but lots of parents have kept their kids at home apparently.

I have also heard that parents don't want to risk infection.
